Stephen,
Your column was solid again, man. I laughed up a lung when the HiFiMan's battery died while installed in your system! I've had a similar scare with other portables in my home set-up, and yeesh- it is real embarrassing when you catch yourself freaking out in the middle of yr living room trying to identify a very loud and new sound coming out at 90db out of your speakers! I was pretty shook up until the rest of me caught up with what the hell just happened. Or what about if you fell asleep on the train, and found a car-load of people staring at you like you have Tourette's, after being abruptly awoken by the dying battery alert? Fun stuff.
I think portable designers need to closer at the real-world envelope of 'shit happening' circumstances, if possible. I am intrigued by the HM-602; great comparisons as well.
Another friggin' awesome reference with the 'Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!' selection- it was already on the turntable when I read your column. Ah, old-fashioned media... There's an alternate 45 version of 'Nowhere' with the vinyl release I haven't listened to since it came out. Thanks for the reminder!
