Marantz CD5004

I needed a CD player to use with a headphone amp and a pair of AKG K702 headphones. Based on the positive review in Stereophile, I purchased the Marantz CD5004, and I am very happy with the sound quality I'm getting via analog outputs. It's a marked improvement over the Marantz CD-67 SE II player (about 10 years old) that it replaced--clearer midrange, less grainy highs, and easier to use.

Before I got the CD5004, I bought an open-box Sony S570 BluRay player, but its drive action was so noisy as to be completely useless as an audio player. I understand that all of the Sx70 players and their Sx80 successors have the same affliction.

I remember fondly

my CD-67 SE II. I spent a lot of good hours listening to it. I even remember how I loved the way the drawer closed on it. Great you have upgraded!

Marantz CD5004
this honestly seems like such a cool CD player. it look super sleek plus it has those musician friendly functions of Q Replay and the ability to retune the music by half-steps.

I'd be interested in hearing how those functions work.

also

I still have the Marantz CD-67 SE. Always enjoyed it but when I bought a fairly cheap other cd player and it sounded a bit better, I went the DAC route. Now the old Marantz is the transport and w/ the DAC it's my "better" cd player again.

I would have kept the CD67 SE

I would have kept the CD67 SE II as a transport, but the unit no longer responded to its remote control (and the problem was in the player rather than the remote).

Understood. Hey, what headphone amp do you use? I found that the sound from the headphone jack on the otherwise nice Marantz was not very good.

headphone amp

I use the Headroom MicroAmp to power my AKG K702 phones. I haven't compared it to other headphone amps, but it is significantly better than the headphone jacks on some of my other equipment (the cd5004 and Denon 3805 and 4310 receivers. The amp doesn't sound any different with these phones than the headphone jack on my 25 year old Carver C-1 preamp (these Carvers regularly go for $125-$175 on eBay, so they are a bargain compared to the price of many low-end headphone amps).
