Considering your difficult agenda , I think George Thorogood would help set the mood .

I like the way you guys think. Roots. Roots music it is!

Unless of course someone else comes up with fantastic suggestions!

You two have inspired me. Really.

Good but predictable suggestions. No disrespect.
Jack Daniels themselves sponsor some music and have a more eclectic, modern, interesting variety than you might have suspected. In 2011 they recommend
* And So I Watch You From Afar 1636
* Cathy Davey 1643
* Emmy The Great 1635
* Ian McCulloch 1629
* Jape 1644
* Kate Nash 1634
* Kid Adrift 1639
* Kid British 1642
* Little Barrie 1633
* Ma.Mentor 1637
* Mani 1627
* Neil Hannon 1628
* Ramona 1640
* Romeo (The Magic Numbers) 1632
* Sharleen Spiteri 1625
* Steve Mason 1630
* The Crookes 1638
* The Moons 1641
* Tim Wheeler 1626

none taken - i go with what works. especially for a trip to a whiskey joint. I'm pretty sure after the first tour, some rowdy classic rock and roll is in order (faces, stones, black crowes -- that genre). maybe some blues (robert cray, willie king)

if it were up to me, I'd just have Farewell to Kings by Rush and Innervisions by Stevie Wonder as the only two albums in my car + a couple hip-hop mixes.... but it aint my car.

both distilleries are in DRY counties! No joke! NO SAMPLES! The horror!

But, Tennessee has liquour laws such that everyone in the car can have an open container of alcohol except the driver. So we will draw straws to see who will drive.

I do feel some pressure to stay mainstream as I wish to please my compatriots and fellow travellers. I could hit play and cover a lot of the stuff that Ariel suggests, we have great overlap in our tastes!

Frank Zappa reminds me of what Tommy Chong said about Cheech and Chong being like a big black dildo: You either see it and say "Cool, a big black dildo" or you say "Oh no, a big black dildo!" While I like most of the Frank I hear and own more than a little, I would hate to force someone with less adventerous tastes to have to bear Frank. Especially since the offended will be sporting lit cigars.

Finally, how cool is it that Jack Daniels support the former lead singer of Echo and the Bunnymen? I am a Dickel man myself, but I will have to get some Jacques out of respect.

What a great band, but I cannot listen to Geddy sing. Same with Axl, great band, can't listen to the singer. I like some folks who are not strong singers, but there are a few people that the timbre of their voice is anathema to my ears.

Drtrey3 .... Dry , you must be kidding , sounds like a good reason to stay home .
That would be kind of like going to the famous Harman/Revel candy tour without hearing the sweets .
I hear Montana is lovely this time of year .
Regards Tim

I know, whiskey whiskey everywhere but not a drop to drink!

But the open container laws in Tennessee are so lax as to be a joke. Anyone but the driver may have an open container of alcohol in the car. So we are drawing straws (so to speak) to see who drives.

Ariel, the trip will likely be the second weekend of April. I am still working on the playlist. So far, the roots music idea is holding strong! I have put in almost all the bluegrass I have, which is not enough, and all the David Grisman that is not too urbane to make the cut.

Acoustic blues is in, as is old school sounding country. No violins, but fiddles are acceptable. No surf music or garage rock, even though I could make a case for either. I decided to stick close to the roots concept.

No jazz as of yet, although there certainly could be, but I am looking for a rural feel since we will be in that area. I will post more from home where I can peak at the playlist.

But thanks so much for your interest and suggestions!

reckon you oughta include some Willie Nelson, then. On the Road Again; and Whiskey River. Those 2 should start your trip off right.

OK, I brought the home (big) ipod to work today so I could share the Roots Road Trip Playlist. So far.

Aerosmith, old stuff and rootsier stuff from Honkin on Bobo.
Allman brothers, basically all I had.
Norman Blake and David Bromberg, the rootsier Bromberg.
The most country of the Byrds.
The folky side of Johnny Cash.
Van Morrison's celtic tunes.
The Chieftans.
Rootsier Clapton.
Country Costello.
Cowboy Junkies that does not induce a seconal haze.
Some of the more obscure Creedence.
Nashville Dylan.
Country Dead.
Some of the blusier David Grisman.
Most of Levon Helm's latest.
Some of the Band's faux Americana.

You get the drift. The Roots music idea implanted itself in my head and has stayed there like an ear worm. Basically, if it is my current collection and has a dobro or a banjo, it made it in.

I promised I would not buy any new stuff, so I am ripping some Waylon and some Willie and Waylon with Willie tonight.

God help me I am a nerd; thanks to you all for being such good company.

Well, the trip was a huge success! We had a driver with a hangover, so he drove the entire trip while the rest of us sipped or drank. In light of our esteemed destinations, we had Jack Daniel's #7, Gentlemen Jack, and Single Barrel Jack. Nothing came close to sucking! For our trip to George Dickel, we only had Dickel. I had some single barrel Dickel, but left it at home! A good time was had by all, the tours were fun. The best part is one of our members had almost grown up on the Jack Daniel grounds! His grandfather was a Motlow, as in Lem Motlow, the second owner of the distillery. So that was just fantastic.

The tunes went over well adn were very well accepted! Roots worked, and my buds approved of the theme and execution. I was puzzled that I had included two Meters records, they were a bit too funky to really fit, but perfection is a fool's errand most of the time. So thanks to you all for your thoughts and suggestions!
