Have you tried another USB port on the Pc? If so and it still doesn't work then try plugging in some other type of USB device into the original port to see what happens. If the other devices also do not show no matter what port you use then I would suggest attempting the following steps below:

1. Power off the PC
2. Power on the Pc and get your finger ready to strike one of the following keys when the messages presents itself on the monitor during boot up to enter the Bios screen: Either the F10 / DEL / F12 key or similar depending on the PC model
3. Once you are in the Bios screen you are looking for the option that either enables or disables USB functionality. Probably found in the Advanced Section somewhere.
4. If you find that this option is off then you would want to enable it again then save your changes before exiting the Bios menu

If the above steps correct your problem then I would suspect that your CMOS battery is dead on the motherboard and it is not retaining your settings.

If none of the above worked find another PC to try your device on. It it does work there either then it's dead

I was in IT support for a number of years and here's the deal. A farmer sold a pig to his neighbor. The next day the neighbor was knocking on the farmers door. The neighbor told the farmer that the pig he had sold him had died right after he left. The farmer said well he never did that before. The point is a computer is no different from any other machine or human for that matter. You go to start your car it won't start. The frig you've had for 30 years won't cool. The CD player is silent. The co-worker you just spoke to yesterday died last night. The funny thing is the last time you tried to use/talk to them they worked. I could never figure out why there is this expectation that a computer will never go down or not work and when they do they are somehow different than the car, frig, tv, etc... Bloody Users!! :-)

Seriously though I hope you find your problem. I'm getting ready to take the plunge into the homemade music server pool and I'm dreading it but it must be done!

Although I haven't seen your exact problem, I have seen many related problems. It's probably a Windows registry glitch. Have you tried rolling your system back using a restore point before the device stopped working? Sometimes this will solve the kind of problem you're experiencing. If not there is always the old re-install Windows option.

Because of periodic re-installs I always have my data backed up.

hi drumguy48, building a PC music server PC is not really that difficult. I do have one suggestion. Keep all your music files on a drive that's separate from the drive with your Windows install. If and when you need to re-install your OS the music you've ripped to the drive won't be lost. I speak from experience. This is from a retired IT guy.

Hi all,
After a frustrating couple of months trying every and all suggestions I could find, I finally decided a complete reformat was my only option-All went well - only lost app. $30 worth of music from Itunes that I had'nt backed up correctly - At least now the Hiface is working a treat. Thanks to those who offered advice,Michael...
