I got a scare. One of my 8 year olds has this thing that he needs to touch objects that are interesting to him. Understandable really, but he found my rega 3 interesting and grabbed the tone arm and moved it quickly. I freaked, thinking he had broken something, then really freaked last night when I tried to play something. Turned out he had just goofed the tracking force, so no harm no foul.

I used that time to listen to and rip Elegant Gypsy by Al Dimeola. Man I love that stuff! Ripping guitar, acoustic and electric. Honestly I prefer the electric as the sound of Ovation guitars leaves me cold. But Race With the Devil on a Spanish Highway is the soundtrack to the detective movie in my head.

If you are a Dimeola fan, than you would simply love the trio albums of Al Dimeola, Paco De Lucia, and John McLaughlin.

P.S. glad the Rega survived those little hands. I had a pair of JBL's that my neice got a hold of with a fingernail file and she carved some really nice X's on the top corners of the walnut veneer. I think I had 3 heart attacks once I saw them. :-)

I was listening to Madness' first album and Barney Kessel's Red Hot and Blues record from 1988. First the Madness, this is absolutely no audiophile recording! Compressed and flat, but man it is fun music! And it sounds just fine loud so you can crank it and do the ska.

As for the Kessel, I just love the way the man plays guitar. There is a quality to his improvisations that is all his, I wonder if it comes from his hailing from Oklahoma. He was a disciple of Charlie Christian, but plays just like himself. The tunes are nothing too special, but the line up is fun, with piano and vibes and rhythm. The solos are fun, but the killer thing about the record is the dynamic range!

I was ripping this, so I looked at the files as I split them. HUGE drum hits when compared to the rank and file levels it was recorded at. The interesting thing is that it is a 1988 digital recording. The instruments sound ok, nothing really full bodied, but man those dynamics pop!
