So many, but I'd have to say Trent Reznor. The most influential person in music in the last 20 years. Other contenders include Jaco Pastorius and Victor Wooten.

It's really impossible for me to single out one. In jazz that would be, Columbia-era Ellington drummer Sam Woodyard; in classical music, baroque violinist Giuliano Carmignola; in pop/rock, guitarists Larry Campbell and Charlie Sexton (they really do play and sound like a single being IMHO) in Dylan's Love and Theft-era band.
