Golden State is the best tune of the past several years.

John Doe so rocks! He has SUCH an emotional voice. Very plaintive. I love the X stuff, but his solo recordings are of a different order I think.

I have been enjoying getting reacquainted with Alice Cooper. My cousin had School's Out, I still remember looking at the album cover while we listened to the record. That was in the 70s, and I had not listened to him in years.

But then I found 3 cds of AC for $9.99 and got them for my 15 year old daughter. He scares her! It is so funny! I told her that Alice was supposed to frighten parents, not their teens, but she is still suspicious of his music! Ain't that killer?

What I am noticing is how the band was decent musically, but the songs were so well crafted and rock so hard the lack of brilliant musical ability doesn't enter into the equation. They way Alice sings out of tune on Desperado is really intense and amazing. What a concept, singing poorly to increase the poignancy of the song. Brilliant.

And now I read that the band is being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. About time! Now they need to bring in Chicago.

I am working on getting my 8 year olds to use the computer to listen to music more. So last night, for the last 30 minutes before bedtime we took turns playing a song and listening together. The first round the kids all went for The Beatles as Beatles Rockband made them intense Bealtes fans.

I was excited when one of my sons thought that the cover to a Sonic Youth album looked good and picked one of their songs. Sadly, it was a little slow and the kids are fast tune oriented, but they did appreciate the noisy guitars.

I played Zombie Woof for them, hoping that the more salacious lyrics would go over their heads (they did) and they are interested in those great little quirky lines that permeate Frank's work.

Any ideas of other quality kid friendly (and fast!) music I can turn the kids on to?

Google "MIKA" and check out his two main albums.

My 10 and 12 year old kids love him, and I find him harmless in terms of ruining young minds!

Playing Yaz reminded me that I hadn't played this Prefab Sprout album (released as "Two Wheels Good" in the US) in as long a time. Great stuff!

Thinking of Wes Phillips today...

holy crap this record is good.

I will have to check out Coverdale Page. I always considered Coverdale a cheap imitation of Robert Plant, so I had avoided the record. Speaking of Plant, anyone else have the 24/96 download of Raising Sand? WOW, the bass is absolutely astounding on that recording. Makes me miss my subwoofer.

It has digititis, however.

MFSL CD of ELP- Trilogy.

I was listening to the hirez version of Help and noticed how different the backing vocals on some of the tracks sounded. On the title track there was an interesting quality that made me wonder if it was Paul singing. If it was, it did not sound like his normal voice. At any rate, it is a sparkling transfer and worthy to stand next to the Japanese vinyl I have. Trey

Tom Petty-Damn The Torpedoes[Blu ray]hearing this album in high quality 5.1 is like hearing it again for the 1st time imho.

I had fun listening to Wish You Were Here last night. It is graet to listen to at night becauwe of all the quiet passages. I need to listen to Animals, which I have never heard all the way through and The Wall which I grew tired of due to it being relatively ubiqutous there for awhile.

I bought Umaguma (sp?!?) awhile ago, but I have no interest in listening to it!

is so amazingly cool. I love his playing, but it just kills me that he is this dapper Englishman now. Mark, have you ever seen the Making of DSOTM? In the dvd, he plays the parts from the record, showing which guitars he used and how he got the sounds. You need to see that as you are a Gilmour fan.

Have you kept up with his more recent work? I have not, but I bet I would like it.

really are great. I enjoy both the Carnegie recordings a lot. Funny thing is, they are really not my favorite types of music, but it is like visiting a bygone era. And it is good that I am tolerant of other people's politics, because Belafonte is a political moron as far as I am concerned. But these are great recordings of really fun and interesting music.

It is a really good album. Alot of groovy solos and the last tune called, "I Can't Breathe Anymore" has a cool lap steel guitar solo at the end with a ton of delay on it. Kind of reminicent of Red Ryder's "Lunatic Fringe" Steel guitar. Awesome!

 I believe this solo album is Gilmour's best solo work. The other two, "About Face" and "On An Island" are good, but not as good as his first one. You'll love it.

My wife declared that Wednesday night was reading night, no tv or computer games. I asked for the inclusion of music, and she happily agreed! First up was the sacd of Creedence's Willy and the Poor Boys. Man that is a good and fun recording! I wanted to rock out, but the kids were reading, so I enjoyed the tracks quietly, a difficult sacrifice! My son Thomas recognized Down on the Corner and said he liked it. My wife sang along to Cotton Fields and we listened to the layered voices. I was struck by the interesting choices made in production, when to goof with Fogerty's voice, when to use a mono drum set, when to spread them out, the little tricks in the arrangement of The Midnight Special. It was a great listen.

Next up I put on Days of Future Passed by the Moody Blues. I know the hits from the song, but I had not listened to the album in awhile. I was listening to the dts version, but really could not get much surround out of it. No bigge, I did not want to futz with it and break the mood. The kids enjoyed the classical parts a lot, there is a wonderful soundtrack feel to the symphony parts. I got a kick out of the nascent psychedelic stirrings of the group, a soft spot for me. Thene there is the song whose title I forget that opens with a 12 string and fools me into thinking I am listening to the Court of the Crimson King. I thought of putting that dvda on, but I knew it would frighten the children! We ended up with Knights in White Satin. My wife and I were grooving, the kids less impressed. Man, Justin Heyword has a great progressive rock voice. It was quite enjoyable as a recording, even if not the last word in surround.

So Wednesdays will be our music and books nights for the summer. I think I will start with the 24 bit Magical Myster Tour next time. Or maybe an sacd of Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra. Time will tell, and I will report.

You are a truly blessed Man to have a wife that enjoys audio as yourself. I don't think it would be a stretch to say that most of us guys on here have not had the good fortune you have had concerning a music loving wife.

We shall see indeed! I just ordered an outlaw subwoofer to replace the one we lost last year in the Nashville flood. She loves music, but finds my spending money on equipment, well, challenging! The sub is big, which does not help! I gave her as much as I spent to replace some stolen jewelry for her and doubled the amount to put in savings, so i JUST might get away with it, but we shall see.

But I am blessed to have a lovely, wonderful wife, and that is not a joking matter at all. She is a good gift from God, even if she kills me when the sub comes later this week!

So the sub is supposed to come from Outlaw on Friday. I hope the delivery company delivers at their normal time, which is about 5:30. I would be home by then, but toiling with striaght appointments till 4. At 10 I get the phone call from FedEx, the guy tried to deliver it, but left me a message. This has never happened before, getting a message from FedEx delivery man. I call him back and he offers to take it back to the corporate office where I could pick it up on Saturday. Of course, I am leaving on Saturday, for a quick trip across state. I unenthusiactically say "OK", then he says "Or I could meet you later, about 4:30."

Again, I have never heard a FedEx guy say that. I stuttered something like "OK" and he says call me when I am 10 minuted from my area and he will meet me and give me the sub after the signature. I am overjoyed! We do, he does, and I have to work on him to get him to take the $10. I tell him the story of losing the sub in the Nashville flood, 14 months ago, how my stereo has not sounded the same, how I am going out of town, how he has given me much joy. He takes the $10. I call my wife to tell her what has happened, and she is suitably impressed. "God just wanted you to have that subwoofer honey." I stuff the sub in, drop it off, pick up the kids, and set it up. I banish everyone from the downstairs as I run Audysey, and give her a listen.

My sound is transformed. It is not the bass so much, it is the whole spectrum. The Infinity Alpha 20 speakers, freed from their sun 80hz travails, open their throats and sing. We listen to a little, eat dinner, watch Iron Man 2 till the kids go to sleep (it was quite impressive as well) then sit down to listen to Clapton's Slowhand. The record is dear to my wife, and we sit in silence as Cocaine, Wonderful Tonight, and Lay Down Sally roll out of the system. I break the spell by saying "Wow, the sound is transformed." My wife looks at me with a rueful smile and says "You are right, I never believed it would make this much of a difference. I guess you were right." I reminded her of the math, how I had put much more money into savings than I spent on the sub, and said "And let's be glad I was right. Otherwise, I would have wasted the money!" A big smile came over her face as she saw the wisdom of that statement. "OK, so let's listen to that HD Band on the Run" she said.

And we did.

To be fair, I have to turn the damn thing off when regular tv is playing as the mix is so crappy all you get is one note bass from a speaker that can do much more. But I am looking forward to getting back home and putting on Man/Machine by Kraftwerk, and the 24bit Beatles, and the HD vinylr rips of the Who and Al DiMeola, and oh yes Pink Floyd.

So we are very happy chez Trey.
