The "sexless Rubber Duck" loves them

I wonder why my DVD's don't play on your player. Pal/Ntsc issues?

Not at $4.00 per tune or $40.00 per album. Never. Ever.

Are these folks on crack???

What they are doing here to broaden their customer base is an admirable marketing plan. They ought to be making the rounds on the forums spreading the word more in an effort to keep the momentum going, but I'm afraid they are shooting themselves in the foot at these prices for artists I've never heard of!

I don't think you could sell A-list artist for these prices. Why do these companies think Hi-Res is the new vehicle for raping customers?

I agree. For one, I am never paying such an outrageous amount for a track not to speak of an entire album with an unknown artist. If on the other hand I'm dying to get my hands on it, but that would be a rare occasion...

Yes. Audio DVD Creator lets me choose to burn NTSC or PAL. All my current players are NTSC only.

Robert,

I agree as there is another site offering basically the same thing on DVDs at a high price and I have no idea what their sales are like, but I will not be a customer either at $30 to $40 a disc or download.

If you can press 1,000 DVDs of 2496 music with packaging for $1.50 each the market can be had for certainly well under $20 and depending upon what profit level you need, under $15, which would make sense to me. Those who think that 2496 means they can double the disc price are in for a rude awakening I think.

The other question is does the artist and the performance, plus the hirez presentation allow a higher price? Only each customer can decide that, but I can honestly think of no artist that I am a huge fan of that would have me drop $40 on a disc. I don't do it on new vinyl and I won't on SACDs or 2496 DVDs. An electronic download should be very competitive.

Off the price question, can this download vehicle work if the price is competitve with reg cd pricing? Would audiophiles find it convenient enough to participate? Would a $1 to $2 adder above cd pricing be a deal killer, even though it is hirez 2496?

I'd say yes probably, but if the downloadable material doesn't change into something we really crave for, it may easily die a slow and painful death. That's the short version...

Maybe they are but maybe they've read that central law of the free market - "Charge as much as the market will pay".
In my situation where rural satellite so called broadband service provision costs silly money the recording company charges aren't the only problem. My service provider charges obscene amounts as soon as I exceed their monthly 'allowance' and I'm buggered if I'm going to pay them that. When and if we finally get unlimited downloads at true broadband speeds via optic cable I'll jump on the high-resolution bandwagon, so long as high res-graphics and notes come with them & I can view them on my iPad with each album loaded on my server or whatever. Until then forget it.

See the above capitalist paradigm.

I would not buy a player for a totally dead format. At least they still press SACDs. I would and will buy a great DVD player at some point before Christmas and it will become my main audio player.

Those of you who own DVD-A's, buying one would make sense. I don't even know how available they are anymore, other than the OPPO players.

If I am going to be recording and playing 2496 files, it does not make sense to listen on a marginal, reasonably affordable player. I must bite the bullet one time.

The one thing everyone seems to forget is that you can burn high resolution files to a DVD-A. You can't burn an SACD.

As a confirmed capitalist I agree to charge what the market will allow, but if crazies like US think they are too expensive, I bet the market ain't gonna allow $40 downloads.

I liked what I heard over there from Art Lande. The recording sounded really fine, and his approach sounded like Chopin meets Bill Evans. Barbara Higbie was a name I recognized from her recordings with Darol Anger, who is a David Grisman alumnae. But I won't pay $40 for these when I can get two 24/96 albums at hdtracks for less. I think part of the disconnect for me is that I prefer great music to great sounds most of the time. Although of course, great sound REALLY helps!

The competition, though scarce at the moment, will bring others in line, eventually.

HDTracks downloads:

CD = $11.98
HiRes = 17.98

And these are by and large all A-list artists!

You can, but you need a DVD-A player to play them unless you use the "Mirror" program.

With Audio DVD Creator the pcm files at 2496 will play on any DVD player with 2496 DACs. We need to find a way to lose the dedicated player for file sharing.

Most os us are unconcerned about SACD/DSD, just as the commercial market has. I would like to go to 24/192 and have them play in any DVD player. That would be something.

I guess very few players are able to do that yet, am I right?

Mine has a dedicated upsample card built in - without which I wouldn't be able to play 24/192.

24/192 is a limitation of DVD-Video Discs.... you can only choose from 48 or 96
