4 rock guitarists who deserve to be thought about

Jeff Healey
Yngwie Malmsteen
Gary Moore
Andy Powell

I cant understand why Clapton would be included in this list, hes washed up and never was particularly good, last time i saw him the session guy with him blew him away.

I am absolutely crazy about the double CD: Alison Krauss + Union Station LIVE, especially CD #2 where Jerry starts the session with 2 wonderful tracks: "A tribute to Peador O'Donnel" and "Monkey let the hogs out"

Man, if you like that stuff, god, you would love my home state... bluegrass everywhere.. Live is a great album. I actually have the whole thing on DVD(one extra)...if you want it, just holler...

What about Keef Richards? (He does have some genious riffs)

Seriously though....nobody has mentioned Wes Montgomery or George Benson which is kind of surprising.

My personal faves include David Gilmour (that man can make a guitar cry) and Eddie Biebel (plays for Wayne Hancock) when he plays he puts on a guitar clinic.

Since most of us don't know how to count to five, I'll list many other guitarists. They may not be in a Top 5 list, but should be mentioned IMHO:
Steve Howe (Yes)
George Harrison
Eddie Van Halen
Nils Lofgren
Alvin Lee
Albert Collins
Martin Barre (Jethro Tull)
Danny Gatton
Michael Gurley (dada)
Roy Buchanan
Ry Cooder
JJ Cale...probably the best minimalist guitartist
Lowell George (Little Feat)
Willy Porter
Andres Segovia
Wes Montgomery
Al Di Meola

Nice list of musicians to check out in this thread! Here are a few more that perhaps shouldn't be overlooked? (First post, just to contribute in return...)

Bill Nelson (Be Bop Deluxe, Bill Nelson's Red Noise)
Chris Spedding
John McGeoch (Magazine, The Armoury Show, Siouxsie and the Banshees)
Tyson Kindell /

OK, someone moved me to want to agree with something....

Bill Nelson can really play guitar.

Since I'm here, I will add....players who, when I've heard them play, make me wanna stop and say, "Man, that's some great guitar playing."

Frank Zappa, I think, could play anything.

You may not agree, but Prince can wail beautifully. Seriously! He may be in the top two of all 'rock' guitarists. He can do it all.

Another one y'all won't believe unless you catch him playing live....Moby is spectacular on his Gibson SG.

Norm Hamlet, maybe my own favorite slide player.

Mick Taylor as the best Stones guitarist.

Mark Knopfler as the king of 'tasty licks.'

Robert Fripp as a concept artist.

Phil Freekin' Manzanera, people! Go buy his stuff right now, dammit.

Absolutely. That rendition by Tuck was simply amazing. His version of Little Wing is also very nice.

whats love got to do with it.

Actually I used to have this thing when I was younger where I would call authority figures "grandma". I got used to my grandma yelling at me so much, that if anyone corrected me, I called them grandma(not as a derogatory term, either.. it just came out)

This is a great thread.

I second the Prince nomination. When his is on he is amazing.

And Richard Thompson! How did Clapton get so much attention while Thompson remains in the background?

Thinks he's god's gift to whatever. Thinks everyone ripped him off. His shit don't stink, ect... Rude onstage antics.

He won't get any more of my money!

Anyone ever heard of Tommy Emmanuel? Fingerstyle guitarist that can cover any genre. He also has one incredible slap technique that produces some of the choicest harmonics.

Yes..one of the few to be bestowed with the Chet Atkins "Certified guitar player" title... He is very, very good. Ive seen him live couple a times. REad his articles sometimes in acoustic guitar..

I've seen him a couple of times and had a great time. He's no spring chicken (he's something like 74) but he has fun on stage and still is an impressive guitarist. But you've got to like the blues if you're going to see him.

Regarding blues - well, to a point - it's surprises me no one has mentioned Steve Miller. He sure can play a mean blues, for example on his album "Rock Love"

I saw Buddy Guy with Junior Wells at a small club "The Barn" on campus a UC Riverside in the late '70's...knocked me out! He recently showed up with Steve Cropper, Willie Nelson, and a host of others along with BB King at the opening of BB's new club here in Las Vegas. My only complaint was that their sets were much to short. More Willie!!!

Willie almost always does a medley of his hits. The last few I've been to have been a bit disappointing.

I can't believe Lead Belly isn't on your list! 12 String guitar and a huge influence. Anybody out there know of him?

Also, I agree that John Fahey belongs in the top five. But where does Leo Kottke belong? Top 10 maybe? Or am I barking up the wrong tree here...

Regards
S

Matt Guitar Murphy is one of the all time greats. In the 60's and 70's the BEST blues musicians like Memphis Slim, Willie Dixon, and Sonny Boy Williamson REQUESTED him as their guitarist.

Holy cow, I read through all gazillion names of guitar greats shared in this thread and nowhere was Frank Gambale mentioned nor was Doyle Dykes. You gotta be kidding me guys. FG is one of the top 5 if not THE top electric guitar player on the planet and Doyle Dykes is arguably the best acoustic player. You be the judge:

Sigh...not one one classical or flameno guitarist in sight...how unimaginative.

Celedonio Romero and any of his sons: Pepe, Angel, or Celin
Paco de Lucia
Carlos Montoya (IMHO, an even better guitarist than Paco de Lucia)
Christopher Parkening
Narciso Yepes (possessed of absolutely sublime technique)
John Williams (not the soundtrack composer)
Anthony Bailes, the superb lutenist

And while not a guitarist, the virtuoso harpist Nicanor Zabaleta.
