Riding the float is always a good idea.

I also bought my 60" tv on a 3 year interest free BB deal.
I bank electronically and set up monthly pymts designed to pay up 2 months early just to be sure there is no way they can charge me any interest.

The price was also 30% off.

I financed my first stereo system in 1978. For $1000 dollars, I got Advent loudspeakers, a Technics TT, Sanyo cassette deck, and Yamaha CA 610-II amp.

I still have the speakers!

"Riding the float is always a good idea."

In many ways it's a win/win: you get some stuff on borrowed money which is easier to pay over time, the company gets to show increased sales, manufacturing goes up, inventory moves, etc.

It's only when you miss a payment does anyone get screwed. If you aren't smart enough to beat such a simple system, you probably shouldn't be spending the money in the first place. Better to go to Vegas and loose the money respectably.

You got me.

I admit to financing almost all of my purchases.

I use a credit card for almost everything. I borrow their money for about a month at 0% and then pay the bill.

Thousands of dollars a year financed for everything from 2.5 gallon Ducati Superbike fill-up to <gasp> toys.

And the Ducati is not a luxury performance toy?
Friend of the family had one of the rare models years ago, and a lovely sales woman I used to work with has one.
BTW you forgot to say about using the credit card for breakdowns as well

Cheers

Toy with a capital T. The Ferrari of motorcycles, handmade, replete with high maintenance and temperament. "Ducati: Making mechanics of motorcyclists since 1946."

From a review:

"Made of steel, titanium, carbon fiber and sadism, the 999R is as close as you are going to get to a grand prix motorcycle, and unless you are a fantastic rider with years of experience, you don't want to get that close. This bike will beat you down like you said something bad about its mother.

"This thing is misery on two wheels, a wickedly disposed and temperamental exercise of sheer mechanical narcissism upon which you assume a posture like it's flashlight inspection day in prison. Its 150-hp V-twin motor runs on damned souls and is lubricated with the fat of unbaptized children. All this bike wants to do, all it dreams about at night, is catapulting you over the handlebars or pitching you backward onto the streaming concrete . . .

"So plan your day accordingly: After riding this bike, you will need some time to unwind. Go for a Polynesian fire walk, perhaps. Play some "Deer Hunter" roulette. Or, if so equipped, have a vasectomy."

The reviewer sounds like Dan Neil of the LA Times (Journalism Pulitzer for his AUTOMOTIVE column!)

Our UPS driver (yes, they make pretty good $$) has an 848. He took it to Laguna Seca a while back. I asked him how he liked it compared to his Yamaha(?) and he said with a smile... "I noticed I was immediately faster on the Duc."

He also said the long trip to the dealership is well worth it for the desmodromic valve adjustment, when necessary.

Yep totally agree
The Ducati is seen as the Ferrari of the bike world over here in the UK as well.

Yes, Dan Neil. His reviews are always fun.

The desmodromic valve train is fascinating. The valves are returned to closed position via cam lobs, not springs.

The 848 is a very nice machine - my only criticism is that it has a wet clutch (like the majority of motorcycles) rather than the signature Ducati rattling dry clutch.

A worldly female friend compares a Ducati Superbike to a challenging mistress: gorgeous, high-maintenance and likes to be ridden hard.

Absolutely. I have made several purchases on a credit card when I run across a deal that is incredible and or soon to be snagged up by someone else so I had to act quickly.

But, I have also made sure that the balance was paid off at the end of the month. Thats the key.

In my younger days when I used my hard-earned cash on... ehh... other "stuff", I frequently financed purchases, and I admit to having puchased both my amp and CDP through 3-year financing as well (4 years ago). At that time I couldn't save up enough money, which would amount to only $4600. But even though the warranty lost it's value during that period, the equipment still plays, and better than ever

I used to have toys, then I got kids. They will fix just about any excess wealth problem, as well as addictions to sports cars (where to put that buggy?), motorbikes (can't go setting a bad example), expensive wristwatches (crunch), etc.

The worst thing of all? Despite their huge TCO they are COMPLETELY FREE, so if you can't afford them you don't even need credit to help you get into trouble..

One of the nice thing is that high end audio products hold more of their value than most other luxury goods.

Having kids is like having a mortgage on a house with one difference:
You can sell the house.

Of course, the exception is if you are Chinese you can sell the kid if it's a girl.

OH NO!!!!!! Did I really say that ?
I'm gonna lose my liberal ID card if I'm not careful

I'm too greedy for kids but I'm not afraid to admit it. I guess the concept of financing a high end audio purchase would seem even more outrageous for those that do have kids as they would certainly have many other financial responsibilities to be concerned with other then audio.

For the bachelor types like myself it doesn't seem like that bad of an option as long as you can pay it off without busting the bank or causing yourself other financial issues in the process.

I am similarly childfree, by choice. Kids typically like me, they may visit, but somebody else must take them home.

Still, when balancing short term desires for a toy with the long-term downsides of financing said toy I can't see doing it.

But I am clearly in the minority. Most don't hesitate to use credit card debt and loans to finance everything from boats to pizza.
