I know nothing about your Sony phones, so I can't help with any comparison with the Senns you have in mind. I'm guessing that what you're looking for is better isolation rather than better fidelity, right? I've used a pair of Senn 280 Pro for editing with good results. Excellent isolation from external noise and more than acceptable fidelity - no match for the 600's for open phone listening, but great for editing. Given that the 280's seem still to be available and at about half the cost of the 380's, you might want to give them a look. Sorry I can't be more helpful than that.
I may have to go audition a pair. I do believe that the HD 280 and the Sony 7506s have similarities. I am looking for an upgrade in fidelity and probably should by the AKG 701s except they are open back and not usuable at any live recording sessions, which is what I need.
I think I may head out to a Guitar Center and see if I can audition a pair of 280s and 380. The 380 are generally about $169 and a good buy. I have found the Sony 7509 not as accurate as the 7506s, so not worth the extra $100.

You've lost me, probably because of my ignorance. You're looking for a set of phones with better fidelity than those you're currently using to monitor live recording sessions. What will improved fidelity enable you to detect and rectify in your recording setup?
I have found that I am enjoying my recordings slightly more with cans than with speakers. That has more to with distance placement, mic separation and angle that I must work to improve upon. I have been reviewing JA's K622 article in the Phile archives and the pics to Tony Faulkner's mic placements.
There is term called "angular distortion" that comes from less than perfect mic position that differentiates speaker listening than on cans. I think that the Sony's mid bass coloration is masking some of that. My goal is not binaural recordings. lol
It may also mean that I may need to start taking some monitor speakers with me for use during rehersals for a real check on mic placement conflics. I still want some more accurate sealed cans to hear more. The reality is that my Sony 7506's and your Sennheiser HD 280 are very good for a mere $99. Price to performance is very high in my book.
The overall goal is just to hear more so I can improve my recordings. I am open to any and all suggestions.
