Thanks for the heads up and explanation. I can easily appreciate how this could happen.
Proof positive that Stereophile is in league with the Devil!
JA's explanation will never fly in Critic's Corner.
No worries...
You are right. I have changed my thinking.
A mistake like this could not be mere human error.
Arthur must be exhausted from patting himself on the back right now...
Since I hear no apologies coming out of Washington these days for what has been going on for the last 10 years, I find this ad issue to be of a magnitude of 9 raised to a 200 digit negative exponent. If it was a star it would be billions of light years away. Just not worth worrying about.
I'm verklempt.
Talk amongst yourselves.
Now if my issue would just show up...
I thought your "issue" was covered on the Glenn Beck show today.
Sorry for thread seepage, just goofing on the "issue" word.
Well forgive me but I take issue with the whole affair!
Maybe one of our resident mathematicians can give us the odds on the likelihood of this ad falling dead center of the review pages.
I figure it
Didn't catch Beck today...did he deliver his normal education about our government to the dems watching?
Forget the international monetary conspiracy or the JFK assassination. We got stereo-gate right here!
OMG rg- this is as nutty as it gets.
I dunno. I think KBK could spin it much better. I miss him.
I am guessing that the value of the ad "misplacement" will depend upon the review wrapped around it. I just hope we don't have another advertiser drop out. I mean, in this economy how could I ever cope with my subscription going to $20 or more? Some one in my household would have to stop eating or at least cut back to only 2 meals a day. lol It ain't going to be me.
Oh joy! The June issue should have some great letters to the editor! Please make room for a bunch of them.
I looked at the tale of the misplaced ad again and it seems it was the result of a series of unfortunate events.
They need to fire that Lemony Snicket guy in advertising.
Still no sign of the online version of the May edition.
It's so frustrating, feels like all the interesting discussion has already blown over by the time it arrives.
My issue has not come, but I thought I would at least comment about the "perception" of ad placement. I'm just glad to have a hifi mag to read.
The official on-sale date for the May issue is April 20. Zinio subscribers will receive their issues then. But I'll talk to someone to see if we can push the Zinio post date forward for the future.
I would really appreciate that Stephen. In this internet age it seems strange, to say the least, that the 'dead tree version' is beating the electronic edition into readers' hands by more than a week. I assume that this isn't the intended effect and something is broken somewhere. If so, it would be great if you could fix it!
I have to say Stephen that it seems the Zinio publishes between a few days and up to nearly a week late most times (from my experience recently).
It does make it rather frustrating, but then the price is a steal of a bargain (offset by the impracticality when I need to drag the whole PC to the loo while sitting there on natures call hahahaha), so I cannot really complain just a shame it means we are behind on some of the fun discussions.
But then it is fashionable to be late to the party
Cheers
Orb
Zinio releases each issue on that issue's official on-sale date, so they're never actually late, except in relation to the release of the print issue, which strays from the on-sale date.
What I'm trying to find out, however, is if we can release the Zinio edition as soon as it's been proofed, which is generally a week prior to the official on-sale date.
I guess some manage to get the magazine version a few days before official release then, as an example last month I did not receive Zinio until I think 2-3 days after posters started commenting on the Totem article that they had seen.
Similar thing happened again for the March article, and then there was another time I posted mentioning I did not have my online copy.
I will keep a close eye on this month, I guess I would not notice this without the keen posting done by some relating to each of the monthly publications.
Cheers
Orb
Yes, that's right.
Bah all I can say then is they are lucky %$"
It's them there demons in Los Angeles! They knew right well what they were doin all the time!!! They saw a perty, unsullied magazine, and they had to jag it ALL up! Now she looks all kinds of whorish! Damn those unbelievers!
You'd think with a non-political realm like audio reproduction there would be less monthly upheaval, but nooooooooo.... thankfully you cut the cows off at the pass.
I could see how challenging it could be for a manufacturer to advertise at the most opportune time possible, but it does reaffirm your magazines' commitment to a lack of bias. Further proof you guys maintain high journalistic standards.
Please tell me you are reviewing the Magneplanar 1.7's soon (and please compare them to the 1.6's if possible)..!
Finally got around to reading said article, and I actually LIKED having the ad in the middle, because it gave a better close-up of the product. Honestly, I wouldn't much care if every review had an ad nearby. It gives you a chance to compare the manufacturers pitch with the reviewers perspective.
John, no worries. I trust you, always have, else I wouldn
Finally received my May issue so I can try to answer this.
In the May issue 49 pages are completely given over to advertizing. The Roksan review comprises 5 pages of editorial (so strictly speaking a full page of ads can't fall 'dead center', maybe it was a trick question? ) and contains two ad pages. So based on the actual breakdown of advertizing and editorial in the May issue the chance of the Roksan ad falling within the Roksan review is 2/49 (0.0408) or roughly 1 in 24.
Nice work, struts! Does this take into account the fact that the Roksan ad was originally placed on page 85 and then later switched to page 76?
Ha! I knew you'd would ask that! The answer is yes, I kindasorta took account of it in the rounding.
Since it was already occupying one ad page outside the review the chance that the Roksan ad would be moved into the review is therefore 2/(49-1) = 0.0417 or exactly 1 in 24.
Nice try Mejias! Got to get up pretty early to catch the struts with his trousers on!
I should have known.
Of course, this only represents the probability of it falling within the review once it was moved from its original location and doesn't take account of the overwhelming likelihood of it never having been moved in the first place. IOW the statistics here very much support the conspiracy theorists. This is all very sinister, an impression further compounded by JA's eyebrow-raisingly overcooked apology.
My thoughts exactly.
I hear the sound of black helicopters approaching . . .
There is a podcast available that I took part in on Monday - http://www.ultimateavmag.com/podcasts/ - in which I didn't mention this terrible error. The very fact I _didn't_ talk about it is, of course, further evidence of my guilt :-)
You got me dead to rights, struts!

John,
I have to admire your cheek. Did you really think nobody would notice the shameless insertion of an ad for your podcast in the middle of a thread about the shameless insertion of ads in convenient places? You make funny with us, no?
I suppose you're now going to claim that you originally posted this in a thread about Middle Eastern politics, that those mischievous little elves down in El Segundo moved it here after you'd gone to bed and that you're appalled by the whole thing, yadda yadda yadda...
I fear you seriously underestimate your readership. Please cancel my subscription immediately!
They don't give a shit about some stupid ass policies
FYI: I proofed the Zinio edition of our June 2010 issue yesterday, a week and a day prior to the issue's official on-sale date of 5/18, which is about typical. As for setting the issue live upon our approval, Zinio says this is impossible because they must also tend to iPhone and iPad versions of the issue. Zinio has agreed, however, to set issues live as soon as the iPhone and iPad versions are ready, which means Zinio subscribers will receive their issues a day or two prior to the issue's official on-sale date.
Note that the June issue is still set to go live on the 18th. The revision to the live date will take effect with future issues.
This is a nice improvement.
Thanks for checking out this matter, Stephen.
Cool.
