In preparation for the "Recommended Components" list, we contact all of the manufacturers, dealers, and reps to confirm pricing and availability of their products. Onkyo's PR firm told us that the A9555, as well as the DX-7555, had been discontinued. Perhaps they're in the process of discontinuing the units.

Has the audio community learned nothing from the US auto companies? Changing models so frequently is NOT a good thing, IMHO. I know various parts come and go, but 1 year? Build it right, buy it right, buy it once. No one who bought one of the year old models will be trading up any time soon. The reviews were very good at the price point.

This part of the business I have never understood.

Then again, Jim, if the makers don't come out with new toys, they don't get new reviews. (I don't mean to say that Onkyo is necessarily thinking along those lines, BTW. I'm not even sure what they're doing, much less what they're thinking.)

Back in the day, it used to be said that as a new model from a Japanese manufacturer was being unloaded on the dock at Long Beach, its replacement was being loaded into a container in Osaka.

Probably still true for DVD and Blu-ray players, but audio is not "hot" enough a market to be like that any more. IIRC, the Onkyo amp and CD player were launched at our 2006 Show in Los Angeles, which means they _are_ a little long in the tooth now.

I guess I'm glad I don't think of my grandchildren that way!!! Reality is the great equalizer.
