IIRC, when you are looking from the front of the turntable, the groove on the right (ie the outer groove - closest to the edge) is the right channel, and the groove on the left, (ie the inner groove - closest to the centre) is the left channel.

Or, if you were in the cartridge head facing away from the pivot and looked down, the right channel is on the left and the left channel is on the right.

Buddha's recollection is spot on. The left channel is encoded in the inner groove wall, right channel in the outer groove wall.
