For the good of mankind, I have an original 'Hollywood town' LP that I'm keeping sealed and never selling.

the Amanda McBroom /Mayorga one?? I dont know how I feel about the music on these discs(well ive only heard a couple..apparently they are hard to find), but man..the sound is remarkable.

direct to disk seems to be the way to go.

You got it. They are remarkable recordings. But mankind should be spared their listening in the overall musical sense, at the least. One I opened and listened to the pertinent song(S) about 5 times..and the other is still sealed. Bought them when a local store closed down, for $10 each. As well as about 5-6 RR (Reference Recordings). The same store had a stack of Nakamichi PA-5's and PA-7's (Nelson pass stasis design) and the matching preamps. About 5-7 of each. And a whole bunch of other stuff. I was crying the blues as I had no money at the time.

It was II per your recommendation. There are still several copies for sale between $24-40 but be careful, although the listing is for the vinyl release there is at least one CD mixed in there.

There is a group called "Sphere" and their album, "Flight Path" is a tour de force of musical ability and recording talent. It is not a reissue and you have to look for a copy either on-line or in record stores. The group included Kenny Barron and Buster Williams and recorded in the early 70s. I have the McBroom album and it is OK, but pretty much audiophile music, in my opinion. Sphere is a group of mature musicians who had played together for a long time at the time of the recording. It is real music that really swings and the recording is beyond reproach. If anyone has this album or hunts it down, let me know if I am wrong.

Yes, I also found the Amanda McBroom/Lincoln Mayorga album quite good. Some of the selections on Opus 3 "Dynamics" to also be super quality, maybe even better.

Cheers.

M&K RealTime direct to disc records are not exactly chopped liver. The M&K drum direct-to-disc will blow your mind.

I have all of the Opus 3 stuff. The engineer, Jan-Erik Persson, is a friend of mine. Great guy.

My pleasure ncdrawl. As you correctly noted in your original post the title is "Missing Linc", somebody has probably entered that listing under "Missing Link" just to trap the unwary. I've seen similar things a few times on Amazon. It's definitely worth trying a variety of search criteria, particularly if something is long out-of-print and a marketplace seller is asking a suspiciously high price.

Half the people out there can't spell and the other half can't read.

So I search for bargains sometimes on fleabay with common misspellings and mis-representations.

That's how I found an original MFA proto-Venusian three chassis octal tube preamp for $105.06

Opus 3 can be very uncharacteristicly musically relevant for an audiophile label. Eric Bibb is great.

In the D2D pantheon, the Duke Ellington Band "For Duke" is a killer. The Les Brown "Goes Direct to Disc" and the Harry James "King James Version" are also pretty damn spectacular.

Thelma Houston did a version of "I've Got the Music In Me" that sounded good, but the rest of the LP wasn't that great.

"Rough Trade Live" on Umbrella was really something - years before Four Non Blondes.

Atlanta Brass Ensemble, Sonic Fireworks Vol. 1 and 2 have some really stand out sonics. The Strauss bit of the opening of Also sprach Zarathustra is the best recording of that bit I've ever heard.

I'll have to thumb to remind me of others. There's a sort of salsa latin one with, I think, instruments and fireworks on the cover that has good sound. I can't recall if it's DD for sure, but I think the Turk Murphy Band even did a ragtime DD recording!

DD LP's are the bomb, sonically.

+1 for Umbrella. I have a couple of their D2D titles including Mozart's Eine Kleine Nachtmusik (UMB-DD6) and Bach's Violin Concerto in E (UMB-DD9), both conducted by Canadian Boyd Neel. I have to say I am not a huge fan of Mr Neel's conducting (his Bach has no 'bounce' whatsoever), but sonically these are both absolutely reference quality.

Oh yeah!?! I have 'The Cars' debut album on Nautilus half speed JVC super-vinyl, and I JUST opened it a few months ago. So there!

Not D2D, but actual music..which is nice.

Of course, don't we all have the Mikey Hart RR 'Professor Johnson' album on LP? I have one and of course, I've listened to it twice and grown well past it. I do have the first of the opus3 test albums, of course. And, well, a whole bunch of other stuff I don't listen to either.

Waterlilly is an amazing label. State of the art sound with some serious musicians. As a fan of eastern music I'd say Waterlilly is simply the best in the business for that kind of music.

I agree. Some are disenfranchised with Kavi after he severed his relationship with TimDeP (and of course got rid of all his custom made analog gear) ...he now uses a digital recorder (sound devices 722 and also a DVRA1000 DSD Recorder) and more "garden variety" associated equipment, but it aint the gear...it is the person using it.

Kavis getting up there in age, and simply could not lug all that heavy stuff around anymore.. He is such a great man. I love him to death! He is like a wise old Grandpa but an ultra cool one.

I have many of the Sheffield series from The Missing Linc through the Moscow Sessions. And yes, I also kept one of my two Hollywood Town LPs sealed (autographed too). The West of Oz was sonically pretty good too.

Do you also have some of the "Jazz at the pawnshop" albums from Sweden? I am particularly happy with the 30th anniversary (limited number) edition of that recording (2006). It is 3 SACD/CD+DVD album, originally recorded in 1976, and has been distributed as both LP, double-LP, CD and SACD if I am correct. The 30th anniversary edition has been cut at 10kHz, but never the less it has a wonderful dynamic sound, and the music is a marvel. It was (in my country) distibuted through Naxos Music. I also have to mention a more on topic record, or double record: Harry Belafonte live in Carnegie Hall. Even though recorded in 1959 it has a great soundstage, and is considered a must for audiophiles in Europe. It's a 200 gram QUIEX super vinyl reissue. RCA Victor LSO-6006. I purchased it a few years ago on www.classicrecords.com, but it seems to be sold out at this point.

Hi

I bought the Lincoln Mayorga III record for $5 from fleabay just to see if NC was full of crap ( normally he is !! ) well blow me he was right, the music is awful but the sound quality is incredible.

What other recordings are there in that series ? is it just the Lincoln Mayorga that has this quality or is the general opinion that its any Sheffield D2D albums ?

Does this only apply to the Vinyl or do the CD's have the same improvement ? Is it the quality of pressing or the recording ?

Alan

It's a bit of each, but the primary point is doing the recording right in the first place, so they have something to press correctly. In essence, if the CD mastering work is done correctly, along with the CD pressing, then there is no reason it will not sound spectacular as well. If both CD and LP are done as well as they can be, then they can show the difference between CD and LP as the qualitative steps that they are.

The Sheffield recordings are worth learning more about.

You do point out the paradox of high end recordings: In general, the more closely targeted a recording is to audiophiles, the higher the 'insipidity' of the performance itself.

all of the sheffield labs discs are amazing, sound quality wise. i use them to see where my system sits, and to show it off...(and as a learning tool as I am a recording engineer)

thanks for the full of shit thing, Alan, dickhead.

No, it doesn't...particularly if you venture in to the seminal hard bop literature of the late 50's and early 60s.

Regarding "reference" rocordings, lately I've been using the Music Matters 45 RPM Blue Note reissues, e.g. Lee Morgan's Tom Cat, as well as Speakers Corner, and my selection of original Blue Note deep-groove monos. I also use original pressings from Mercury Living Stereo, e.g. Los Romeros, Carlos Montoya, etc. For classical, I use Decca, London FFRR, Mercury, and some Argo and Philips recordings.

I'm still a MoFi fan, since I've been collecting them since the very beginning. Little Feat's "Dixie Chicken" from Waiting From Columbus is my desert island track. Ry Cooder's "Jazz"; Ricki Lee Jone's first album;......all nice recordings.

Dixie chicken is fabulous! Ever heard Lowell George's solo album "Thanks I'll eat it here"?
