What do you perceive as the problems with your present setup?
thanks, i just wanted it to sound better with the most cost-effective solution. i don
sorry if i failed to make it clear, there is no problem (that i know of) with my setup really. i was just asking for opinions from others familiar with the gear i have listed and from those who listen to the same artists and songs i listen to. that in case you want to upgrade, what's my best possible option/s. what is/are the weakest link in my gear, etc.?
anyway, my wife (more on the budget) and i just decided to look for a replacement for the rotel rsp-1068 (prepro). it's beginning to get outdated anyway, and the #1 feature to look for is the quality of DACs. then continue building our collection of vinyl records and once we get to the point of having collected substantially good vinyls then maybe upgrade the marantz 6300 from an audiophile entry level or at least close (maybe the vpi scout or clearaudio emotion/ technics tt-15).
so i have several ideas for the turntables but have no idea on the surround processor (music and theater). can you recommend some prepro in the sub $3k range (used preferrably for better deals) that is superior to the rotel rsp-1068 in terms of DACs or at least music fidelity? i still plan to use my rmb-1075 as my amp unless i need to upgrade as well. thanks!
Eliminate the DSP conversion of your analog audio signals. In that one moment you will get about 50% of the quality of the turntable back from where it was lost, eg, turning it into a digital signal.
Go pure analog from input to output on the turntable.
Using a digital conversion on a turntable is very detrimental to what the turntable can do.
Ie-loose the digital.
The way I always did it, is I used the surround set up in a tape loop on my analog rig. In this way, with a simple flipping of a switch, I had a perfect analog rig without all the detrimental effects of digital.
Digital is fine, don't get me wrong and I tend to listen to it all day. It's an easy format to deal with.
But if I want to get some ~real fidelity~ it's a turntable with a tube phono preamp into an analog amplifier to my analog speakers into my analog ears.
The DSP or digital conversion of the analog signal is the 'itch you cannot scratch' that seems to be bothering you.

Right here you say it: 1. my best sounding setup right now is using the turntable as my source but 90% of my collection are in CDs ripped as flacs in my computer. also, the output from my phono preamp is digitized through the rotel rsp-1068

my problem with the bypass mode is that my speakers are bookshelf type (b&w 705) and i feel they lack bass without the subwoofer (bass management is off) in full range. i can wire the subwoofer to the output of my phono preamp but what if i need to watch movies or concerts that require the 1068
I second getting past the digital of the TT- you're loosing a HUGE part of what a good analogue setup should be. I didn't see a phono pre-amp in the mix- does you're Rotel have that? A very good chance that a dedicated one would be a big boost. Try out the Bellari or other lost cost goodie and you;ll be wondering how you missed so much before.
Subs can be good, but difficult to integrate (even when from the same company) so that could be a path as well- better full range speakers without the sub except for movies. And the cartridge is always an easy upgrade as well.
I hear you that wires don't want to be a big expense but often better ICs from the turntable can really add to the mix. My favorite is Audioquest, like the King Cobra series, which while not cheap, are not crazy either.
