The challenge was to be able to record AND playback sound. It's interesting that he was able to record sound but since those recordings weren't able to be played back at the time it makes sense to me that Edison got all of the credit. So in many ways he half solved the problem. After all until a year or two ago no one knew if he had succeeded. It was still very, very clever though. Was Edison aware of his work?
