I like Julia Fischer's concerto recordings on Pentatone hybrid SACDs. I like Fischer's sense of musical style and she gets great accompaniment from the conductor and orchestra. Her Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto is my top choice.

I have listened to several Hillary Hahn recordings and found her boring. So you might not like Fischer.

There are a lot of great performances on plain CDs. Heifetz and Oistrakh are great names from the past. I like Grumiaux for the Beethoven Concerto, the Lalo Symphonie Espagnole and the Saint-Saens Havanaise and Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso.

You'll have to figure out your own weighting of sound quality and performance quality.

Try Giuliano Carmignola with the Venice Baroque Orchestra.
The cd - Sony Classical SK 51352 - of Vivaldi, The Four Seasons + 3 premier concerto's (RV 257, 376 and 211) is incredible.

I don't have that much experience with the range of Mutter's recordings. Those I've sampled haven't displaced my favorites.

Karajan was the conductor in some of Mutter's early recordings. I avoided those recordings.

So I don't have much to tell you about Mutter.

If you haven't found the Usenet group

rec.music.classical.recordings,

you should try it. Google groups is a good way to read current postings and search for past ones on a topic.

Lots of people discuss their recommendations for works and for the best work of perofrmers.

Try Gidon Kremer's recent Bach solo sonatas & partitas, really fierce unaccompanied playing. Tetzlaff, when he's not being too self-absorbed, can be awesome on either the classics or the new stuff. Kyung Wha Chung, when she was young, was a firecracker... you might like her playing.

Among the giants of the past, I'm fond of Oistrakh and Thibaud... you can usually find Oistrakh LPs from those audiophile reissues or in used stores... too many, too many... but really, I think the best strategy is to go with Heifetz & work yourself forward & back... if you really get into violinists, there's just no way around the big H.

Decca recently reissued a two-fer CD of David Oistrakh and his son Igor playing Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante and Duo for Violin and Viola in G, backed with the elder Oistrakh playing the Hindemith violin concerto and Bruch's Scottish Fantasia. I scored it for $18 from FYE, of all places (the one here kept some of the employees from the late lamented Tower they took over). Better than average recording, for the mid-60s, and extraordinary playing. Also fairly obscure repertoire. Well worth picking up, even if the Bruch isn't quite up to the Heifetz recording.

Do you have to have SACD's, because that really limits your choices. It would be helpful to know what kind of music you heard and liked in order to recommend some recordings.

Hi

Im not at all limited to SACD, i just prefer vinyl over SACD over CD.

I dont have a lot of classical experience, from the music i have seen i have the following thoughts, please consider these are my own opinions and i do not in any way think i know what im talking about !!! these are just my tastes

1 - I seem to love Russian music and musicians, i recently saw the Russian Philharmonic and they just seem to have so much energy. Russian music just seems to be so dynamic.

2 - For violin players ive seen, i loved Vadim Repin and Hilary Hahn, i hated Anne Sophie Mutter

3 - I seem to love big orchestral peices and hate chamber music, however i seem to be drawn to violin and piano solo's

4 - I also love big peices like Mahler 2 which was fantastic live, the more i get into this the more im upset that i missed Muti doing Verdi's requiem on his CSO debut.
Other than the above i dont really have much experience.

Im really looking for emotional music, in the contemporary world im a classic rock fan with i dont do pop, rap etc.
