Some great pictures NC. Thanks for sharing something so personal- for better or for worse, I expect most of us are incredibly divorced form the cycle of growing and harvesting. Seeing your daughter amongst the flowering plants makes you feel something is "right" about that.
My son has recently been exploring the joys of mud and dirt, which both my wife and I have been supportive of. Even though he'll be growing up in a city (small though it is) I'll be making sure he feels connected to the land as much as possible.

Thanks, D. the farm/country air/peace is A very large part of why I came back to NC. I had the option of staying in Germany when I got out the Army, but had to come back and raise my little girl(s!)now) as I had been, on the farm...country style.
We have about 45 acres in our Tract, but the family farm is about 350.
Since you guys are farmers and gardeners, can someone tell me why fruits and vegetables taste like absolute crap in the US compared to Europe or Asia?
Yessir, My granddaddy (who I got the land/house from) grew up right down the road(dirt road rather). It has been in the family since the late 20s. It has been distributed amongs us grandkids and our wifes/husbands, and will go to our children next, and on...Grandaddy said in his will that under no circumstances will our land ever be sold to outside entities/ individuals. I am very glad for that.
Living off of the land is great!(every single thing we eat weve grown/raised). The only thing we(or my wife rather) eat that we did not raise is the meat. (I dont eat meat anyway, but wife gets our beef from a friend of the family)
FDR ended small farming on my mother's side of the family. The last one was Uncle Redman. The government paid him not to farm. He never worked another day in his life. Fucking bum. Tornado finally finished him and his expense on the taxpayer once and for all. Actually, that is not exactly true. Seems he did work as a longshoreman for a little while until he hurt his back or something like that. Mom never did like Red.
The success of your garden is very depressing...I have 8 tomato plants in two planters all of 3 inches high and looking very anemic and two other planters with corn that has not broken the top of the soil yet. On the plus side, my 20'x30' yard is in good shape ad my two mighty 15 foot high trees are doing very well this year as is my cherry sapling.
I did turn on the sprinkler system this week.
know what is great for Tomato plants? Dried milk and coffee grounds. .take about a half cup of each , mix together and apply 3-4 times a week. (to the soil). they will do better.

I have a rusted fire escape covered in bird shit. I'd put a tomato plant out there, but the pigeons would just shit all over it.
Anything that is mass produced will taste bad.I lived in Europe and spent a lot of time in Asia.. the reason why "COMMERCIAL" produce here tastes bad is because it is, well, commercial. High, fast, easy Yields require "efficient" fertilizing(read synthetic/non-organic), and strong poisons(also synthetic), etc.. The good stuff comes from the mom and pop farms. We do not use any synthetic chemicals..all organic... support your local growers. I wouldnt think that new york city would be a haven for fresh fruits/veggies, though...
you need to come out here and try our produce. youd love it. I promise.
Also..the scale of produce production in Europe is nowhere near that of the US.... The focus there is on fresh, locally grown foods. We have an insane demand, so our production methods have been changed to accomodate this...often to the detriment of taste, the environment, our health... but as I said, there are some great Mom and Pop farms in this country.. buy from them. Your taste buds and health will thank you for it.
How did you get your vegetables to grow without a root/stem/leaf system?
thanks! Well, I live in Farm Country..massive tracts of farmland are commonplace, so anything under 10 acres is a garden.
Our main tract is 300..makes my tiny acre look like a pitchers mound.

as for the Mazda..That is my aunts. It has been there since she went to prison. (She was a pain management clinic administrator who got indicted in a DEA sting) .. the "appointments" went thus:
1.) patient goes in to see my aunt and slides the "flat fee" under the secretary's window.
2.) Patient goes back and waits while my aunt would draw up a fake report outlining the "chronic" pain these patients had)
3) After finishing the fake write up, my aunt would then see the patient, ask them what narcotic pain medicines they wanted, and promptly write a script for whatever it was. No diagnosis, testing..just in and out, pay money, and take the scripts. (Oxycontin was the drug of choice). Sometimes the patients would bring the oxycontin back(this was in the drug's infancy) and my aunt would KEEP the script, and sell them or take them herself. ... Her boss, the owner of the practice, was double degreed in Law and Medicine, both from Harvard. Now he is in prison for good.. the other partner (not too long out of Med School) who was not involved (he had just gotten there)but indicted anyway, killed himself.
and the last partner is now a Staff Physician for the show "Ripleys believe it or not"
Funny thing, my aunt was in the same cell block as Martha Stewart, my hand to God.
