Hi Steve,
I don't know if you're referring to video DVD's or DVD-Audio discs but in either case read through this thread over on the Slim Devices forum for information on how to rip the audio from either type of disc.
Ripping the audio from DVDs
Jazzfan - this is perfect, thanks. Just what I needed. I'll give it a try on my Led Zeppelin live video that has PCM tracks on it first.
No problem and I hope it works out for you. As it turns out when we're not too busy arguing about double blind testing and other audio related nonsense, some of us forum members can occasionally post something useful and helpful.
Dear Steve and all interested in using a pc for high end audio applications.
Ripping a DVD-Audio onto your hard drive at native resolution is easy. The software I use has ripped every (some 30 or so) DVD-A's quite perfectly. The software is called DVDAExplorer and it can be found for download at no charge but you have to jump thru hoops!
For DVD video discs, DVD decrypter does the trick.
These pieces of software are not exactly intuitive to use but even a PC dummy like me managed to get results with a lot of patience!
The only problem I have had to date was with a 48Khz, 20 bit file (Neil Young Silver and Gold linear PCM track). Foobar will not play the file and so far I have been unable to reformat the 20 bit file as a "24" bit file...
Hope this info is of use to people who just want to listen to the music they have bought, the way they want to!
Ok
Seeing as we are getting clever !!
Can anyone advise how to create SACD discs ?
I have lots of analogue and DVD's that i would love to sample in hi rez and convert. It seems as if Tascam make a box that will give me DSD but how do i get from DSD to a disc that will play in a SACD plaver ?
Alan
Looks like nothing happening on the PC meets SACD side.
Now you know why SACD might not suceed and why DVD-A, now obsolete here in Japan, has a chance of rebirth! It's PC friendly.
I note that blu ray can do 192/24 bit too and its only a matter of time before that can be put to good use.
We just need more analog master tapes remastered properly to feed our audio systems now...
Why don't you get as good a sound card as you can find and rip (what a horrid word!) your LP's to 24/ 96K. The format is in far excess of what A/D converter hardware can deliver anyway I recon.
These files you can use to create a DVD-A or even a plain jane DVD still at 96/24....
But the problem being then that I have a SACD player, no way of playing DVD-A anymore.
The cost of a great DVD-A player is way high
Alan, there is no way to rip/convert the DSDFF stream from a sacd... and yes, Tascam does have a couple of units, the DV-ra1000 and dv-ra1000hd (korg has the mr-1), that record in the DSD RAW format, but the issue is authoring. You can play the DSD files directly from the tascam(through the analogue out), but to get the data "authored" you have to send it to a special SACD mastering house...so no way to listen to the DSD stream natively OUTSIDE of the box, other than going the mastering house route(and only a few houses are equipped to author SACD discs)
The tool to access DVD contents and rip them out is TuneFab DVD Ripper. It can help you rip DVD to more than 100 formats which allow you to enjoy DVD contents without any limitation.
