That's why I watch Washington Journal, there's always someone who calls in and says something so totally ignorant it gets me up out of bed with a, "WTF?!" I just hate it when it's the second caller of the day at 6:02 AM.

I don't think this is funny. What is up with the CNN reporter. She's acting like a spokesperson. She obviously was not the right reporter to send into that crowd. Liberals need to be more careful. This is not good press in their favor. Moderates don't like this sort of shit. They are the silent majority not us blowhards and reporters getting unprofessional. She obviously needs to be reprimanded at the very least.

It's amazing that nobody protested when the gov't invaded Iraq. Nobody protested when the gov't was torturing people. Nobody protested when the government spied on its own citizens. Nobody protested when the gov't gave out multi-billion dollar no bid contracts to the cronies of the administration. Nobody protested when the economy crashed due to deregulation and lack of oversight and downright collusion with the Wall Street traders. But God forbid the gov't should raise the taxes to help the same yahoos climb out of a recession, then all of a sudden, all Hell breaks loose.

'Nobody protested'...the left was in a non stop whine from January of 2001 till January of this year. They not only protested real excesses, the made up a universe of imaginary horrors. They did nothing but protest. Now its time for Americans to holler about real abuse...

Now Bush has created a 59-41 majority in the Senate. The 59 part is thanks to his DoJ and its mistreatment of Senator Setevens.
The current make up of the House and Senate are direct objective feeback of the type of job W got done.

He never got a single budget through Congress...He was unable to reform Fannie and Freddie as the dems in Congress stopped reform. He was unable to fix SS, etc, etc...
If I remember correctly, he wanted to allow investment of SS funds in the markets. Can you imagine how many people would be absolutely, positively fucked up the royal ass if he had his way?
Can you imagine how many folk are truly screwed over now who think SS will be there for them in a decade or so...they run out of surplus next year and have to start cashing the IOU's...

It would have been optional but I have thought about that myself. Maybe this is why it never came close to passing. Congress was trying to prevent this (recession) from happening. It isn't like they didn't see it coming. Also, it isn't like they did a damn thing. In fact, some contributed to it; ie Barney Frank. Today he beats up on Harvard Business School students that ask him questions.
I'm willing to bet you anything that SS is going to be there a decade from now. In fact, I'll bet you anything that it'll be there when I retire, which will be a few decades from now.
It'll be there. You just won't be able to tap into it until age 85.
I heard if they would just remove the cap on the paycheck contribution to SS that it would make SS a going concern again. I don't think that is too much to ask. It wouldn't matter to me. I never reach that cap. I contribute every pay period. Year end and year out.
I agree with you...SS will be there....BUT, it will not be at today's benefit. The money is simply not there. I planed my retirement around getting about 70% of the benefit I would receive today if I was on SS and I have 9 years to go to normal SS retirement.
In a few years, especially as the SS surplus is gone and the government has to actually pay SS from normal taxes, for the first time in many decades, money they want to use to buy votes, Congress will hold hearings or the President will establish a blue ribbon commission to 'save SS'. The result will be the same as if they had never met as everyone knows what must happen. The retirement age will rise, they will goose SS taxes, and they will cut benefits, and probably tax the total and not just the 85% rule we have today (double taxation, taxed when made and taxed when collected).
If you are relying on a full retirement through SS, get ready for a few more years of work when you thought you were retiring.
Actually, it's going to be a grandfathered in thing. You're children will have to work longer under the current system. Example, starting in July 2010 state employees in NM will have to work 30 years for full retirement. To collect full retirement (80%)the new employees will have to have a total of Age + Years of service = 80 years. Currently, for employees hired prior to July 2010 they only need to work 26.8 years for full retirement at any age. Sad considering NM had one of the top 10 retirement plans in the nation prior to this recession.
