The CD, it should be noted, was born out of greed. It was devised to prop up record sales on the expectation of people replenishing their record collections with CDs of albums they had already purchased. They used to call this "planned obsolesce" in the car business. Sound quality was supposed to be one of the big selling points for CDs but, as we know, it wasn't very good at all. It was just another con, a get-rich-quick scheme, a monumental hoax perpetrated on the music consuming public.

Cougar is alright, but that paragraph is rubbish.

Cougar has been a whiner all his life. Yeah John, I still refer to you as Cougar. SOB can never make up his mind. "Little pink houses for you and me". That is what got us in this mess you retard. But ain't that America? No! Actually, but isn't that America.

Aren't all commercial media born of greed?

John obviosuly allowed his music to be transferred to CD, so he's complicit at best.

"CD was born of greed, and mine sell for the same price as everyone else's."

Hell, Edison cyclinders were born of greed, radio was born of greed, 78's...born of greed, LP's...you get the trend.

The only format not born of greed was Elcassette. It was born of stupidity.

Enjoyed the knee-jerk reactions to the quotes you posted .

The article has merit. Mellencamp has been an authentic roots rocker through several decades of crass trendism. Life, Death, Love and Freedom was recorded with the CODE process, which attempts to bring another hi-rez format to the woeful compact disk. Developed and produced by T Bone Burnett. Another slacker, eh?

Thanks for the link.

what is the CODE thing but another business venture? Maybe Bruuuuce and Cougar can do a tour together...call it the back in the U.S.S.A . tour.

also. the latest Cougar album sounds Godawful. I mean terrible! (Mr. Bone did produce "Time The Revelator, which is Amazing, very thankful for that)also read a quote from Mr. T stating that with this format, all the mediums would sound "THE SAME". right.

I guess the career revival thing is in vogue now. (remember Rick Rubin/Cash?) please......

"...Mariah Carey...songs were built...from the top down."

As sexist as this statement is, I turn the sound down and look at Ms. Carey...from the top down, bottom up, side to side........

John builds his music "...from the ground up." I guess that's why I prefer to listen to rather than look at him.

Good stuff Stephen-

The music biz, it seems to me, is like all biz- some good and some not. There have always been unscrupulous companies and producers, as well as guys who did it for the love of music and hopefully made some money along the way.

While I don't love the CD format, I don't think it was ENTIRELY a scam. All the economic reasons (like easier storage, less space, lighter weight for shipping, eventual simpler pressing), were bonuses to the primary industry reason: a portable and easy care product that at least sounded better than cassette tapes. I do understand that many folks simply don't want to be bothered to take care of their records and also want to bring their music with them. My wife would be in this category. She would readily agree the music does sound better off my turntable, but that would never be enough to for her to switch or give up portability.

My gripe with CDs was the way that they (for a time anyway) took away your choice. It wasn't another format, it was the ONLY format for something like 15 years and that really sucked.

Now things are sort of at a balance for choice, even if new LPs are usually more money. But so are most small production, or gourmet, items. You want real pesto freshly made, well you pay for that.

nc, you are young, irrepressible and much admired by JSB.

The sonics of the new album, even with the CODE process were a mixed bag. I also noticed some clinkers (production/engineering?) that did not distinguish this new process. However, what I think is important is the STRIVING for better sound- the NOT SETTLING for media-crity. Even when these attempts fail (I have some pretty awful "audiophile" vinyl pressings) it is important that the industry still tries to perfect its craft. I never expect to achieve perfection, but the journey for higher-fi is rewarding in itself.

Not.

Very, very true. They gave the folks who desired to be told that there was an 'easy, push one button' solution in life..a 'push button solution'. They fed them marketing bullshit and people ate it as they were told that long enough and hard enough..that they bought into it.

Like the point that the average Joe now thinks that big TV's are thin things that hang on walls. ie, plasma and LCD TV's. TV, marketing, and film based indoctrination, it was and is.

What they don't realize..is that a 120" TV is better and cheaper..if you buy the right projection set-up. It's a hair more tricky to navigate but even the producers of such gear who have both types (projectors AND Plasma/LCD)in their stables will NOT push the projectors into the public realm. This is due to the fact that they can get the consumer to buy a 40inch..then a 50 inch..then 60 inch... over and over..a hair bigger each time.

Buy...Buy..Buy...

I watched this CD thing evolve and it didn't take me long to figure out that it was a turd on stick that they waved about in a pretty feverish fashion, trying like hell to get it to catch on.

I Do realize, though..that we are not having the origins of our comments coming from the same direction..so..my reply does not fit perfectly as a counter to your comment.

All that said....The CD -WAS- born of greed. Pure and simple.

How?

Sony was involved. Research their tactics.

Now, Sony is evil. What's next, Battle Creek, Michigan? The CD was born no different than the LP. Look back to reel-to-reel if you don't believe me. The 8 track was born no different than the LP. The cassette was born no different than the 8 track. The CD was born no different than the iPod. For fuck's sake. Fuel injections was born no different than the carburetor. Any other bright ideas, Ms. Nihilism? Should Intel have waited until the dual core before getting into the market?

What a bunch of fucking hypocrites. For some of you suckers in the market money is no object when it comes to equipment. But media? Pft! I shit on all you morons.
