I have always been a loud speaker listener in the past.
Bought a pair of Shure in ear earphones for aircraft use.
At work I have an old pair of RS Optimus headphones. Brought in my Shure earphones to compare. The mids and highs were so much better with the Shures but there was no bass at all. Is this typical?

It's typical of Shure. If you want more balanced IEMs look at Ultimate Ears. My UE Triple.fi 10 Pros compete with my AKG 701s for top to bottom smoothness and actually have a little more impact in deep bass. They have several excellent models at several price points.

I love my Shures for what I use them for (mostly air travel). Which model did you get? I hear the UEs are great, too.

The next day I thought about amp/earphone interface problems and tried the earphones with a different source.
Problem solved.
