Sudden Rise in Volume and Distortion

Hi. I'm new here so I hope I have the correct forum.

I have a Sony combination CD/AM/FM/Cassette portable. Recently, the volume, which may start out at the correct level, will suddenly jump to a much higher volume, along with increased distortion. The front desk person at the Sony servicecenter said they want to change the eye of the CD player. They also said they will not warrantee the repair if I do not use the weight that has to be placed on top of the CD while playing, which has been lost in a recent move. This weight is NLA. I mentioned that the problem crops up in the AM/FM mode, not just in CD, so I'm thinking it's not the eye, but an amp or preamp problem.

Does anyone have any thoughts on the cause of this problem?

Does anyone know where I can get one of these weights?

Thanks.

Re: Sudden Rise in Volume and Distortion

As it sounds like you've figured out it has absolutely NOTHING to do with the CD pickup/laser lens assembly. It might be a dirty volume control. The first thing that I would try if it has a volume knob (as apposed to up/down buttons) is with the unit powered off I'd move the volume between the minimum and maximum settings several times quickly. It could be a number of other things too.

it is also about the same odds (50/50) of it being a multi-wire umbilical cable inside the unit that the volume signal happens to be carried on, or an associated solder connection/plug..

Yep, it could be lots of thing. Most not user serviceable. The reason that I mentioned the volume control is because it's one of the few things that anyone can try.
