Truly a tragedy. A lot of Aussies post on Audio Asylum and have given accounts of the fires.
Best wishes to everyone there.
I hope those fires weren't set by single mothers.
I've lived through and survived a Victorian bushfire some years ago and decided I'd never again live in a house situated in the Australian bush. My last property had acres of it but the house stood proud surrounded by fields with several springs and a back up diesel generator for fire hoses. I lost two friends in this fire in an outer suburb of Melbourne, Gisborn. The rest of their family is as yet un accounted for. I have another friend, wheel chair bound, who's remaing at home in one of the areas still at risk. Begging him to get out now has fallen on deaf ears.
One aspect of all this I find really frustrating is the continued pretense this disaster has nothing to do with global warming. The closest politicians and emergency service authorites here have come to acknowledging this is to speak of 'changed conditions'. Scientists here warned some years ago that climate change in Australia was going to trigger far worse and more frequent bushfires. Hardly anyone listened. How many lives will have to be lost before those in government begin to realize that temperatures of 47 degs C are not, and never have been, normal on the East Coast of Australia?
Thanks for your thoughts everyone. Sadly this tragedy is only the beginning of a battle everyone on this planet will eventually have to fight.
99.9% of arsonists are male.
White males.
Oh good! I'm glad we can still continue paying single mothers at Lamont's expense.
On a serious note though, my heart goes out to all those having experienced the fire or those who've lost their friends and family.
Dead white males who write well
