I just looked on the map. It is more likely you will have to walk around the square - sometimes there is too much snow in the open square. Just past Peel street, is the deal. So it's like, 6 minutes. I lied, sue me.

If you walk around the square, head up peel street and then under the walkway thingy. You will maybe come across some homeless folk sleeping in a sleeping bag under that covering that the walkway has, on cold cement in near or below freezing temperatures. I always remember that I am coming from a high end audio show - and give them some money.

There are also some good restaurants on Peel, but they are a few more blocks up. No-one does it as good as Dunn's EXCEPT for Schwartz's....which Montrealers swear by - for good reason. They've been known to leave Montreal after a visit..and bring 10 kilos (22.5lbs) with them, to try and 'tide them over' until their next visit home.

Schwartz's is too far away to walk to, sadly, and the usual situation is a lineup..which I am sure you want to avoid like the plague after a long day at the show.

Here is the map, if you need it. It's the one at 1249 Metcalfe.

Schwartz's opened in 1928. Dunn's..1927. As you can see, they've been working on perfecting (and then having the sense to 'leave good enough alone') those sandwiches for quite some time.

I've been doing this since the show opened at the new location, as it was close enough to walk to. We always have a nice deserted place, with quick service. I guess the place will now be crowded. Sucks for me if I can't find a seat now, but I'd rather you folks get a good meal as well.

I'll be there, KBK. Those sandwiches look like guaranteed heart attacks. Cool.

I just spoke with my Bud, who was a long time Montreal denizen. He said that the Dunn's sandwiches are OK, and maybe even good, but Schwartz's ..are in a league of their own that is far outside the pale.

I asked him..'so you mean I've steered all those folks wrong?' 'Not really', he said, 'but Schwartz's is simply just the best -and is worth the ten minute cab ride, if you can get in the time to give it a shot'.

He described how the meat is made at each place (food snob alert!) and I can see the difference. He said that folks who have had the best of such in Ny, would not find the Dunn's to be the best, or 'revelatory'..but..that Schwartz's really would open their eyes.

This is like that story of how some folks think that the best steak they have ever had was in NY...until they had an Alberta Steak..in Calgary, Alberta. 'No contest', they say, 'Real Alberta steaks in Calgary win, hands down.'

Here is the website. As you can see, the reason I recommend the Dunn's..is right in the photo on Schwartz's website. A lineup. If you do go there..get the regular, not the lean, he says. Too dry.

One review of many:"The best place in the Milky Way to sample smoked meat sandwiches!"

Decisions!

The original reason for posting it, still stands..though. What it is..is the ability to eat -now- at the show, and get back to the show. Most of us will be too busy, timewise, to venture out to Schwartz's shop.
