If I could afford a Mac computer, I'd have one. That allocation of funds thing is a bitch! One dog ended his last year at the vet every few weeks and the cocker spaniel - the one that lost his left eye to spontaneous gluacoma which brought him to the veterinary opthamologist for weekly visits - looks like he's getting a cataract removed from the other eye next month. Blind dogs are not my favorite thing though Buck is still a happy pup through all this.
Not complaining, just that my priorities are somewhere other than computers. I ended up with this HP because of the amount of memory and expandability it has and because I was in need of a computer that day. I thought I'd done my homework but nowhere did I see Vista 64bit mentioned until it was too late. It was a mistake that wasn't helped by a less than informative salesperson IMO. I've been somewhat disappointed by MicroCenter where until this happened I had spent a reasonable amount of money and had good results. In the end I think this computer is going to have a short life span as my main unit and - once the vet bills subside - will eventually become part of a hard drive based audio source.
Or maybe I'll just get pissed enough to run over it a few times!
Hey, tell Winer my computer renames everything "Jeff" so he knows there's no difference between any of these files. Of course, he'll probably insult my computer more than I do.
He is beyond belief, isn't he?
I tried my Van de Graaff generator on a CD but it erased all the ones and zeros.
Ethan, if those can be put on a CD, I'd be happy to pay you at your site to get a copy!
No Hi Fi to computer communication for me right now.
Did it leave any of the numbers in between?
If *what* can be put on a CD?

The sound test.
I don't have a burner.
Ah, okay, easy. Email me from my site www.ethanwiner.com with your address, and I'll pop a CD in the mail to you.
BTW, I finally got the first two files earlier, but for the past three hours I get "try later" messages on the other two files. Morons. Either they're in the free file sharing business, with a viable business model, or they're not. I'd never use that site again, even for free!

One of the few things Winer and I agree on.
ARE YOU LISTENING, FC?
THAT SITE SUCKS BIG TIME!!!
Buddha, ill put whatever you need on cd for you.
as for the comparison, I am going to load them up in audio diffmaker and report back.
I thought there were some flac files? I seem to only find the wav. Link or page for the flac?
RG
FileFactory is not working again today. If you'd like to send me a CDR too that'd be great.

Just checked at 2:30p EST and I had no problem downloading Tango. Try it at different times (particularly off peak times; ie. late eve), as availability probably depends on their server load at any given time of the day.
Sorry to hear you guys are having hassles with the download site. I guess the peak times would be after 3 or 4 pm in the USA. Darned kids! Thanks for your persistence and co-operation with each other. The experiment was never intended to be devisve and I'm pleased to see that camaraderie exists on the board.
Yet again, same BS today about no slots.
I've still been trying daily, and still got nowhere. So as far as I'm concerned this listening test is a dead issue unless FC is willing to mail me a CDR. It's not for a lack of trying!

Every time you post a message saying you can't access the files, I give it a go. It's 11:30p EST right now, and I was downloading "CASH" within 5 seconds. You must be attempting this during their peak hours, I figure. Why not ask FC to transfer the files to savefile.com? It's called "savefile" because it saves you a lot of headaches. Get it?
This has all been pretty anticlimactic. Is that all there is?
I thought there were other people involved in this? What happened to them?
How about someone who isn't on FC's "ignore" list getting him to just give the answer or move the files?
Geoff Kait:
I don't recall seeing your input on the test, and reading of your results. Where are they?
Jan Vigne:
IIRC, Buddha was also interested in taking the test, and someone else has agreed to send him a CD, as he has limited access. So that could take a bit of time. And I'm sure there are others here who could take the test, and it would meet FC's quota of 4 testers,
and compel him to release the results.
Like you, I would prefer to see this happen sooner than later. Considering how long its been that FreshClip posted his test challenge, it's been dragging on too long.
"I don't recall seeing your input on the test, and reading of your results. Where are they?"
I don't get involved in reckless enterprises.
We're not talking about you joining the staff of AIG. This is just about taking a simple listening test, so this thread can come to a proper conclusion, which you also seemed to be looking forward to. If FC sticks to plan, then without two more willing participants, "that's all there will be". (And it also implies that those who were "reckless" enough to go ahead and do the test, might be left in the dark).
"This is just about taking a simple listening test, so this thread can come to a proper conclusion..."
Simple listening test? Shirley, you jest.
"...which you also seemed to be looking forward to."
I think I made it pretty clear I was neutral at best.
Sorry. I meant simple to me. By this, I mean it took me about 20 minutes to run through the test. (Add about another hour to get the files). I personally don't call that complicated. Of course, I can't foresee the many ways you can complicate things. I wasn't even good at predicting how much Ethan would complicate this little test, and I really should have, given my experience with the last listening test I attempted to engage him in.
That's not clear at all to me, and I don't know what you mean by wanting to be "neutral". It could mean you don't wish to be perceived as someone who might possibly hear the effects of demagnetizing a CD (and thus risk your reputation for being a sane, sensible audiophile who doesn't go for "weird tweaks"), or it could just mean you're Swiss. So I'm still not sure why you're not taking the test, but are nevertheless interested in hearing the results. As I've said, going by FC's criteria, if you don't take the test, you are less likely to ever see the ending you seek to this thread. And then, this ongoing issue of whether demagnetizing CD's might have an effect will never be resolved!
OK, I'm near a DVD burner for the next hour. Where'd the dang clips go?
Same place they always were:
