If 'greener' means 'sounds better' then this is an audio story. If it means it makes a lot of folk feel all warm and cuddly, its pop psychology, marketing or politics.

green may become more important to use whether we care or not. i personally care about it, but if you don't, i respect your opinion and right not to care. however, if the industry does not start to care about this issue, the government might. you know how delicate the gov.s touch is, why use a scalpal when a butcherknife will do. would anyone really want that? by extension, i think that makes it a pertinent issue.

If you want to pay more money for your already overpriced gear for a social end and not an audio one, then go for it, but don't expect me to follow. I'll put my money into better performance.

Remember back in the day we had to wait until the June issues of Hi Fi magazines hit the stands in order to get coverage of CES? And then, we'd get eight pics total.

Now we kvetch if the instantaneous coverage reports on an event we don't 'approve of.'

Instant gratification is now too slow, but we are pretty good about jumping in with instant opining!

Dudes, their reportage happened faster than if you were at CES and tried to see everything Stereophile covered!

I have no comment on Greenpeace, they often confuse marketplace issues with legislative issues.

If some of you don't care how much energy your audio gear gobbles up that's your business. Or is it? Consider this. The UK gov't is about to pass legislation banning the sale of large scale plazma screens. I for one hope such 'ecological fascism' ( as the Randians might call it) spreads from one end of the planet to the other.

I lived in the UK for 2 years in the early 90's. The media fascists used to have vehicles that prowled the streets to enforce the BBC's TV set tax. The UK also did away with the protections against double jeopardy a few years ago (there the government can try you over and over for the same crime till they get the result they like) The UK is a sad and pale shadow of the great nation they were.

The UK taxes you bases on the number of TV's you own? That would cause a revolution in the United States. In fact if everything doesn't go smoothly with the HDTV transition I expect to see a protest in DC.

Europeans would tax one for passing gas if they could figure out a way to measure it. Everything is taxed.

I'd happily pay that tax if I was receiving the kind of high quality, advert free content the BBC produces. Nothing the US broadcasts comes anywhere near it.

You have obviously NOT lived in the land of quality entertainment. I did. I cannot speak to today's UK lineup, but in 1991 there were 4 stations and almost no cable availability. At that time there were some spectacular shows, almost all of which can be seen on one station here, PBS. The rest of the time we had gardening shows, pet shows, and the British equivalent of reality TV...In Prime Time.

While we cannot compete with the best of the BBC, aside from a half dozen shows a year, everything else was worse than most local TV here. Dreck.

I am sure that sorry state is long past but the tax remains, though it funds only a few government run stations. Imagine if the government taxed us all several hundred dollars a year for PBS regardless of whether we watched.

I love TV. Ovation, the History Channel, Encore...hell, dont see myself without it.

Noone can listen to music 24 hours a day,after all.. and for those lapses, TV, video games, and books work out well.

besides, there are days when, having mixed , recorded, or mastered(or performed) for 8-10-12 hours, I do not want to hear the first note.
