At roughly 3.3 million albums Paul Mawhinney has one of the largest music collections in the world. Library of Congress estimates believe that less than 20% of the music contained in his archive is available on Compact Disc. The collection may be worth as much as $50 million, his asking price is a mere $3 million

There is a gentleman in China that The Absolute Sound did a story on within the last year or so who has a massive collection too, though not nearly as well organized. It's approximately 260,000 records with no mention of how many CDs. He also has what is most likely the most impressive collection of Hi-Fi in the world too.

There's no WAY that the Chinese guy amassed all that fortune through the hard-line Communist Party years with a clean conscience.

But Self this guy in China NEEDED all of this stuff and didn't Karl Marx say, "to each according to his need(s)?" Just being silly of course, this is just another perfect reason that I giggle every time some refers to China as a "Communist" country. All Communist countries throughout history were hypocritical, but China has taken it to a new level. His collection is simultaneously impressive and disgusting.

Well, China's proof that an authoritarian government and capitalism can go to bed together and REALLY dig it. There is something repulsive about the way he stockpiled all those equipments & music in there like they're some defunct warheads from the Cold War era... but hey, I give it up. He's basically collected everything that he desired to collect, and from the pics, has eaten everything he's desired to eat, too!

Does anyone else think it's odd that a person would amass more music than one could possibly listen to in an entire lifetime? Are they music lovers and audiophiles, or are they merely obsessed with owning things?

I am a consumerist Buddhist.

If happiness is the absence of want, then I will be happy once I have everything I want!

I can understand those two 'crazy' guys. Once you get a bug for something, it can take over.

My motto for that is, "It's not the having, it's the getting."

My buddies tell me I used to date that way.
