I'm pretty sure that despite of many here having very strong opinions, one would find that each is a pretty good person.

Yay!

Great post!

My enthusiasm for your visit is greater than my jealousness over your good fortune.

Tell us more.

Compare and contrast?

Not quite sure what you'd like me to compare and contrast?

Edit: Ooops, sorry. I thought you were replying to me.

Believe it or not, EVERYONE I have met thus far has been extremely pleasant and gracious. I have a strong suspicion that behind the general Internet facade, even you have some semblance of social graces.

I was, pardon my lack of specificty.

Didn't you also get over to DUP's place for a listen?

I'd like to see what your comparative impressions were.

Now, we gotta hook you up with a blatant subjectivist and get you over to his place!

In most respects, DUP's setup is better by a very, very, very wide margin. DUP's system is revealing and detailed across the entire frequency spectrum. DUP does bass like nothing else. It's articulate, deep, detailed and moving. DUP's system lacks front to back imaging, but I think that is the nature of his listening room. I wonder how much better DUP's system would sound in a bigger, acoustically treated room.

I went to see Ethan Winer on Saturday in Buttfuck Connecticut. Why do all forum members (DUP and Ethan) live in the boondocks, the bowls of their respective states? Why can't you guys move closer to civilization (New York)?

It took me 2 and a half hours to get to Ethan, but the trip was well worth it. Ethan is one of the nicest people I have ever met. He's a very open, and honest guy, a gracious host and very good company.

I agree about Ethan but you must drive like an ant. I have a house not 15 minutes from Ethan's and we make the weekly drive from Manhattan in 90-110minutes on a regular basis. Mebbe you should come up more often, if only for practice.

I was stuck in traffic for most of my trip. It wasn't until I hit White Plains that the traffic eased. I'm also coming from Brooklyn, so that adds another 20-30 mins to the trip.

From Brooklyn? That explains a lot but does not absolve you from bad-mouthing New Milford.

AlexO,

Great job as our traveling reviewer!

Makes me want to get some traps and smear electret cream on 'em.

You haven't lived until you've lounged and rolled around nude in some of those mondo traps... but, that's a story for another day.

Speaking of traps, one thing I noticed about the sound both in Ethan's living room and his recording studio is that there are no resonances or echoes of any type. I always thought that if you treat the room, you will deaden it and that would mean that speakers would beam the sound, rather than envelop your senses. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Isn't this cool?!

Wonderful description!

And great post overall. Thanks!

Thanks for the great post(s) Alex! Just a comment or three:

There are all kinds of things you can do during a recording and mixing

It occurred to me after you left (of course) that we should have spent much more time playing with my recording tools. I appreciate that recording type loudspeakers do not have the same sound or goals as "hi-fi" speakers, and I believe you would have better understood why my big JBL speakers sound as they do if we'd played around with multi-track mixes. Oh well, next time.

Quote:
I have a feeling Ethan threatened to bury his wife alive in the woods somewhere because this is the first time I met a woman who did not object to acoustic panels all over the living room.

LOL, Elli is as big a fan of "good audio" as I am, and her appreciation for the tight clear sound more than compensates for her DNA-based objection to the 48 panels in our living room.

Quote:
It imaged so well, I kept asking him whether the center speaker (he's got a home theater setup) was playing (it wasn't).

As I may have mentioned when you were here, I sometimes do that too, and get up from my chair just to confirm the center speaker is not playing.

Also, and I know I did mention this to you, one of the downsides of an "accurate" system is it reveals all the flaws in the source material. I'm not keen on the bashing of professional recording engineers we sometimes see in hi-fi forums, but there's no question that some of them are a lot better than others. Often when I listen to music I have to wonder what they were thinking.

As far as I'm concerned, you're invited. I think it would be up to Ethan to extend the invitation if he's hosting.

Alexo,

As one who continually complains about subwoofer integration, please tell us your impressions of Ethan's SVS sub?

I can't say that I cared for it too much. It was deep, but lacked articulation and detail. I also heard sub/sat integration issues as well. Given how well Ethan's room is treated, I can't say that it's due to room acoustics. The damn thing looked so impressive, I really wanted to like it, but it's not my cup of tea.
