Kal will surely answer soon, but I hope u won't mind me sharing my experience. Hybrid simply means that the has multiple formats, often 2-channel SACD, CD & MC. I buy for the 2-channel SACD layer.

IME SACD is much superior to CD when using less expensive players like the Oppo. As u move up the CDP quality chain the differences get smaller & smaller.

Shop around at Acoustic Sounds & you'll see a variety of SACD formats. The RCA reissues are stunning, as are many others.

Vanska's Beethoven recordings on BIS sound much better on the SACD layer than the CD layer.

Perhaps it helps that I have autographed copies.

Thanks for the answer, guys. I really enjoy the performance of the Vanska, but I was surprised when I first listened to it on redbook... I was expecting a better SQ from BIS on redbook...

Thanks, guys. That was easy.

BTW, I rarely ever listen to the CD layer or, even, the stereo SACD tracts since all my systems are 5.1. The only situation in which I can imagine listening to an SACD that way would be if I happened upon a magnetic performance that sounded poor in mch SACD. Has not happened yet.

I've always thought that BIS had a relatively "hot" EQ, making the sound "bright" on all but the very best systems. (I guess I need to pull out the BIS stuff again and re-listen now that I've upgraded so much. Maybe now it's just "accurate"). We'll see, but I probably won't get to it until next weekend.

Elk, have you got all that Edward Tarr stuff on BIS. He put together several interesting albums for them, but I only bought one or two.

Dave, report back after you listen. Especially with your new toys it would be fun to get your impressions of BIS.

I have a few Edward Tarr recordings - Interesting stuff. He is quite a historian.

Tarr really launched the natural trumpet renaisance in the 1970s with his trumpet and organ LPs on Nonesuch. I wish someone would reissue those three LPs. I've got the originals but the pressings always sucked. BIS, OTOH, always had great pressings.

It's fascinating to hear those early recordings and compare them with current techniques and sound. The players now are so much better and more musical - including Tarr. The art has advanced tremendously. The same goes for piccolo trumpet playing and early music performance in general.

We live in exciting musical times.
