Can you open it and blow away any dust first?

I'd take it to a repair facility so that they can bring it up to power slowly on a variac. That way the circuits doen't get slammed by the in rush of current. That's is always advisable the first time an older piece of electronics is powered up.

If you just plug it into a 120 Volt outlet and throw the switch, it probably won't explode right away. But about two or three weeks out it may start to make nasty noises and cost you lots of money to repair. Take it to a shop and ask them to bring it up on a Variac while monitoring current draw.

I don't think 12 years is much to worry about. I wouldn't blink an eye at
plugging it in and going to town.

All prior ideas are reasonable and sensible. If the eletrolytic caps are old, they can vent and make an explosive sound. It happened on a Dynaco Stereo 70, otherwise it worked fine.
