Alan, I don't get it? Last week you recommended to Alexo:

Quote:
I know it will sound strange but check out the Quad 22 floor standers, they sound fantastic on delicate material but also can get it on for rock.

And this week you state:

Quote:
The problem im having is that I love the mids and treble of teh Quads, it really makes the music jump out for me, guitars etc just seem to sound great, the issue is that the bass is to wooly and uncontrolled, theres enough of it but its just flabby with no snap.

Which is it Alan?

Its both !!

They do sound great on rock, they just lack that finite last bit of bass attack. Its like 95% of the way there and for the price I dont think you would get much better.

The problem is not that they dont sound great on rock, its that they lack that last bit of bass attack in the mid bass area. The overall sound on rock is great, its just not quite perfect.

Im just after an even better sound and if id never heard the Dynaudios I would have been happy, ive had a lot of other speakers.

Sorry if this is misleading, not my intent.

Sometimes, a speaker which lacks slam in the midbass area obviously sounds better in the upper regions as the listener

Thiel CS1.6 are stunning speakers, with unbelievable imaging, accurate tonality, and great dynamics. The Thiel CS2.4 are just above your stated range. But if you find the 1.6 lacking in bass check them out.

RG

I understand what your saying.

I listened to the Dynaudios again and heres what i found.

For jazz I prefer the Quads, they are definetly more lively. For rock the mid bass ofthe Dynaudios has more attack and the mids/treble is very accurate but just seems to lack the energy of the Quads.

The problem is that I think the Dynaudio is a more accurate speaker but i really like the mids/highs of the Quads even if they are a bit exagerated.

I understand what you are saying about being overpowered by the bass but with lighter music the Dynaudios definetly sound a bit to polite for my taste.

So it still leaves me with the problem of how to get the forward mids/treble of the Quads with the bass control and mid bass attack of the Dynaudios.

I can understand that you feel $4k is not enough to acheive perfection, but it still seems like a lot to me and im hopful that i can get something to combine the two atributes.

Im going to ask something that might sound really stupid so please forgive me.

When i bought the Quads i also got the matching sub to give me a little bit more bass. Now obviously in my room in not struggling for bass with just the speakers but i am struggling for that snappy bass sound. Now as the main speakers were giving me this much bass I havent as yet even opened the sub and was planning on returning it.

If I integrated the sub in the speakers would the additional bass from the sub make things worse ? or is there any possibility it could act as reeinforcement and give me the slam im looking for ?

Again please forgive me if this sounds dumb

i have quad 22's, 909, 99 preamp, and 99 cd as well without sub in one of my systems. the first thing that comes to mind is room acoustics and setup. if you are experiencing weird bass results i think either you need to adjust system tighter or consider using methods to change room acoustics. this includes repositioning quad sub as well. otherwise digital room correction might be necessary. it is more expensive, but added to the cost of the 22's, you still have a bargain if you listen to music, and not as an audio critic. if that is the sound you are after you will never be satisfied.

IMHO the disatisfaction you have described is a lack of mid-bass energy, not sub bass. Many may say that a good majority of speakers are tipped up in this region purposely, rendering the speaker unlistenable. This is true in many cases. It is a fine line to get the balance just right. However to strip music of this energy entirely for the sake of whatever purist endeavor is more unlistenable in my opinion. If rock music, and much of jazz, with slam is a major attribute you require, you may find you prefer less expensive speakers as opposed to the 4K range of "high end" speakers. Just a thought.

Hi

Thanks

Not really sure that room correction would give me that snap im looking for, it might clean up the bass but its not going to add that slam/kick in the mid bass.

You say one of your systems, what else do you have ? and how does it compare to the Quad stuff

Thanks

Alan

The sub is likely to IMPROVE things and provide the missing deep bass and slam. Try it, I bet you'll like it! May take some fiddling with levels, phase, positioning - but the owner's manual for the sub should cover that.

Hi Alan,
Are you using the old Quads, or the newer 22L2 series? I'm using the Quad 22L2 series, and I find the bass perfect in my small room. It's not wooly whatsoever, it sounds very tight and well controled. It's quite an improvement from the older series IMO.

Hi

Im using the new versions.

Im undecided if the issue is the speakers or the room location.

i have shahinian obeliks and in my business office i have a set of quad 63's. the shahinians need room so they sound great in my basement. i love the 63's in my office as it just sounds like music. high volume is not used in there so the quads volume limitation is not an issue.

room correction (either physically or digitally) will improve the mid-bass and lower. i have yet to hear a set of speakers at any price (with reasonable quality) that did not improve with correction. just like the world's finest camera alone can't take a great picture or, just because you bought the finest steaks does not guarantee the perfect meal without proper preperation. while room acoustics should be the first consideration, waf depending on what room is your listening room has to be respected. as such this is where, only in my mind, that digital correction has an advantage.

hope this helps
