Love is such an underrated band. I have a Rhino 2 CD retrospective that does sound shockingly good. Very analog, and the tambourine is startlingly real on a number of songs owing to the fact that the dynamics weren't obliterated.
They have a one disc version of Love's "Forever Changes" that is the same as the two disc but it omits the alternate mix of the album. What's the story behind the alternate mix and is it worth the extra $15 over the one disc version?
The Collector's Edition of "Forever Changes" is not necessary if you have the retrospective already. Most of the alternate takes aren't compelling enough to justify new purchase. There's a funny anecdote in the liner notes, about Arthur Lee listening to the alternate take of "You Set the Scene" in 2002, in which an overdub sounds like someone is rapping. And he's like, who the hell is that rapping in the song? Turns out that it was him. Drugs, baby, drugs.
But the Joy Division discs are great, IMO; the concert CDs are great documents of the band. The Otis Redding one is the most compelling buy for audiophiles, as you get both the mono & stereo versions, plus live concerts, etc.
These do cost $25, but I usually wait until I get those 40% off coupons from Borders or Barnes & Noble, and use them to get the CDs for $15 a pop. Pretty fantastic deal.
Sorry to hear about the loss. I use to live in Baltimore (Charles Village) and had numerous CDs stolen...burglars didn't touch the electronics, which would have been easier to replace.
Yes, the Rhino Collector's Edition is certainly a worthwhile purchase...great selections. Makes me wonder how much better these CDs will sound on a new system.

Yes, sd, the Love reissue is fantastic and I'm so impressed that youngsters like yourself are into early psychedelia. I was a middle school lad when "Little Red Book" hit in the middle of the British Invasion. One of many great bands of the era.
Thanks for the advice I have Love Story 1966-1972 also by Rhino, it has all of the songs from "Forever Changes." I think I'll stay with that. I tell anyone who will listen to me about this band. It's a travesty that this band isn't better known.
