My first response to this question is that you can't really go wrong with this songbird. I really enjoy her collaborations with Louis Armstrong. Verve did a compilation "Best of Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong" (314 537 909-2). Mobile Fidelity released another compilation, "Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong-Ella and Louis Again" on their Original Master Recording series (UDCD 2-651) that is well-mastered and includes many winners.
The above are excellent. Verve also has a "Best Of The Song Books" collection of several albums- all excellent with great musicians and arrangements (314 531 762-2, 314 519 804-2). And Verve, "The Siver Collection" (823 445-2). These were the easiest to dig out right now, but like you said, there are hundreds. She was amazing and much beloved by all the greats.
All now ordered. Thanks both!
