You should seriously consider a refoam of the woofer surrounds before spending $1000 on new speakers. It just might revive what you remember your CD6s to sound like. George and Allison from Nashville, Tennessee do a great job if you don't want to do them yourself.

You can even replace the drivers right from Allison: http://www.allisonacoustics.com/parts.html

Otherwise you could get a nice pair of Paradigm Monitor 11s for $1000.

Woofer surrounds go with time. You will hear a difference, the woofers are reproducing the majority of the sound you listen to. It's well worth fixing your speakers.

If the speakers make you happy, go for the refoam and keep the love going.

Thanks everyone. After some research, it seems very few places in NYC will do the refoam. And the few places that can be bothered all want $300+. There are places that will do it cheaper in the midwest, but by the time I pay for shipping back and forth, the cost evens out. At this point, a new pair of B&W 685s seem to fit the bill, sonically and financially. Any thoughts on them?

If you can find a phone number for George and Allison I bet you can get those woofers refoamed for $100 with shipping. Or at least send them an email. I'll check to see if I can find their contact info. Probably worth doing even if you get new loudspeakers. I'm sorry, but I've always thought most B&W are overpriced. Please check out the Paradigms. I'd also look at the Axiom Millennia M60 v2s. There are many others I feel are better than the B&W 685s for the price. I'll look into it and post again so you can plan some auditions.

Thanks for your offer. I actually ended up with a brand new but discontinued pair of B&W 602.5s. They may not be the best sounding boxes on the planet, but they are considerably more detailed than my Allisons. And they were $350. No complaints here.
