with all due respect, for the money you are about to spend, an investigative field trip might be a wise investment. 2 years ago, i thought i wanted to buy speakers, but after spending some time with a knowledgable dealer, i bought an amp and new cd player , speaker cable and some very good interconnects and actually heard the speakers i had for the first time. they were much better than i thought they were. my point is that just changing one variable may not get you what you want and for what it is worth, the philosophy of the dealer i use is that the speakers are the last thing to upgrade. after 2 years, i have put together a pretty good system that i enjoy greatly by building on a good foundation of products.
i did not mean for this to be a lecture, just a different way to view your situation. hope it is of value.

Of course you should do what you feel most comfortable with, but I believe you will find spending a day driving and listening to be time more than well spent. You are planning on spending $4k or so on a critical system component. Might as well get the best one suited for you.

I agree there is little danger in besting what you have currently, but you will likely find speakers that really work for you if you do a bit of listening.

Plus it's fun!
