Fun stuff.

I downloaded four tracks and took a look. They have a great dynamic range, with a crest factor of about 17 dB to 21+dB depending on the track.

The right channel is always about 3dB hotter and has about 3dB less dynamic range as it has been limited/clipped. That is, the right channel gets up to -0.198dBFS and then is cropped. You can hear the difference in sound quality between the channels in the loud sections; the trombones' sound changes and some of the life is gone.

But it still sounds good and the quieter sections have lots of quick fun dynamics in them. Listen to the keyboard in particular - there are all sorts of notes that stick out from the background texture - just like a live performance.

Nice find!

Elk,

I must say I was a bit concerned when after I posted this I was reminded you were a horn player and a good majority of your recording projects are focused on trying to get small brass ensembles to sound right. A la natural immediately came to mind and I said

It was indeed fun to take a look, including using the FLAC frontend to decode flc files to wave so that I could load them. I can open something like 40 audio formats, including lots of compressed, but FLAC is non-native for my platform. The options never end.

The band is great fun; energetic, creative, great chops.

They must be quite an experience live. Trombones have a large dynamic range and are the loudest orchestral instrument (up to 115 dB at about three feet as I recall). Unamplified multiple trombones at full tilt in a club setting would really flatten your ears in a most delicious way!

I hope others take a listen.
