-I don't like alt country as much as I used to and neither do they.
-I admire Jim O'Rourke.
-I love Nels Cline.
-I love puns ("Summerteeth"-as in, "She's got summerteeth; some 'er hers, some aren't."
-I saw them live, opening for Richard Thompson at the Beacon in NYC and they were terrific. (full disclosure, haven't seen Son Volt live)
-They put "Yankee, Hotel, Foxtrot" out on the internet for free while they were fighting with their record company.
-Their albums are really easy to get on LP.
-The LP release of their latest album had the cd version tucked inside the sleeve; for free.
Hey, I'm the wrong guy to answer this; Wilco's my favorite band (after Los Lobos).

OK, last night I had about 6 hours of sitting in the car pointing north. No cell service, no radio (not even Jesus radio!)...just me and some CD's
Gave Wilco's "Sky Blue Sky" several listens, and I decided...that it's a perfectly adepuate Greatful Dead disc.
Jeff Tweedy seems to be honestly relieved about surviving his past, but he basically just channels Jerry Garcia for 11 tracks.
Not that that's a bad thing.
"What Light" is a classic cut, and I'll listen to the album again and again as time goes by, but "Sky Blue Sky" is more of a mood piece than anything.

In terms of "listen-a-thons" I definitely think this is the best way to listen to music. Coincidentally, I've been listening to Wilco's "A.M." all week. Its not their strongest but as with many albums, the more times you listen the better it gets. I've had side one of The O'Jays "Travelin' At the Speed of Thought" on for about 2 weeks now, and I finally just made it to side 2. I thought I liked side 2 less, until I listened to it again. And then... Well you know how it goes. After announcing its temporary retirement to my roommate (who was probably sick and tired of it), I realized I wanted to listen to a couple more songs on side 2---now Side 2 won't be gone for another few days. What a beautiful endless cycle.
I saw Son Volt 2 years ago at Bonnaroo(haven't seen Wilco yet). I was extremely exhausted so I fell asleep at the concert, but what I saw was great, and very relaxing. Unfortunately my sleep bypassed Jay Farrar's angst. Luckily Steve Earle woke me up and kicked me in the ass with his awesomeness.
