Nice work, Jackfish!

P.E. has great prices, and excellent customer service, too. I know from experience.

Many of the components I use in speaker building I order from them.

okay, maybe i should clarify a little more... I was thinking of cabinent speakers or tower speakers, with a sub if needed. To put those speakers in a somewhat nice billiards room would be very out of place. Don't get me wrong though, I love the suggestions... you've given me ideas for next year's budget. I am probably thinking of total system power around 300-400 RMS watts, and I can save some money by ditching the cd-changer (We'll probably use an iPod realistically). What do you all think of a pair of Polk RTi6's with a sub? Are these good speakers? What sub/amp combo do you recommend? Thanks

Don't know much about such a thing. Our stuff was usually covered in beer and destroyed within a few weeks.

Best of luck.

Klipsh are always a crowd pleaser in that setting, but can be a bit pricey. Perhaps a used set?

My pick...The Infinity Primus 360 towers rock. May be able to find a used pair on Ebay for 200 bucks. I forget the model number that replaced them last year. but I'm sure they still rock as well and very reasonably priced, even new in the box.

I would suggest Athena Technologies; their F2.2 tower has dual 8" mid-bass drivers. That should take care of the needed BASS!

I would stay away from A/V receivers, get a high current 2 channel. You'll need the extra current to play bass heavy music loud. Here's one from Onkyo

Don't forget the speaker wire; get some 12 ga from Parts Express

Not much. I don't know if you need to go with bookshelves and a subwoofer. I'll try again with your updated information.

You can get a pair of new Infinity Primus P362s for $330 on eBay right now. These are pretty efficient and can be driven by about any amp, and they don't lack in bass reproduction. There are few recorded musical passages that they don't do a good job on in the low end.

The AudioSource PreOne/A preamp ($170) and an AudioSource Amp300 ($300) will be a cost effective solution. That's 150x2 watts.

Infinity Primus P362 $330/pair
AudioSource PreOne/A and Amp300 $470
Total $800

If you are going to use an iPod as a source its DAC is pretty respectable and should be OK for what you want.

I would suggest powered studio monitors. If you want good quality, loud and bass using an ipod for source then something like a Behringer Truth system (B2031A & B2092A) would seem to fit. There might be one or two alternatives but Behringer kit is fairly aggressively priced.
