Fun!

I've been tempted to get one just because of all the raves.

My bet is that the buck per yuck factor is very high.

I hope so!

I was reading through the features and specs today, and the 970 apparently has a pure audio mode that shuts down the video circuitry for when I just want to listen, which is most of the time. Maybe we'll see a DA-970HD with no video circuitry at all; a poor man's Ayre C-5xe or Esoteric SA-60.

I need to call Oppo tomorrow and ask if the USB 1.1 port on the front panel in iPod-compatible, which would be ridiculously cool. I could also free up an input on my amplifier. I'm also curious if the reason for refurb sales is a yet-to-be announced replacement. Or maybe they wouldn't tell me that.

Unless you have a completely thread-bare budget, go for the newer DV-980H.

What makes you feel that way? Would I realize any benefit?

I don't have a receiver, so I can't take advantage of DSD over HDMI.

I don't care about the enhanced video features because my TV is older than I am.

I have two speakers, so 7.1 versus 5.1 analog means nothing to me.

Is the "optimized high-fidelity audio circuitry" in the 980 considerably better than the guts in the 970?

I'm glad you dropped in on this thread!

Thanks,

Probably not but I was not recommending it to you, but to Elk (and others).

Thanks, Kal! I knew you were responding to Elk, I just thought there might be a two-channel audiophile reason to upgrade. I'm glad to hear that there isn't. If I can save myself fifty bucks (hehe, Elk reference), I'll certainly do so. The 980 does look a lot nicer and match my equipment better, though. Oh, well, silver it is!

Thanks again!

So, after speaking with an Oppo representative today, I have decided to spring for the 980. I may not need many of the enhanced features, but the gentleman indicated that the audio circuitry has been substantially optimized versus the 970. That, coupled with USB 2.0 (versus 1.1) and the "serious audio enthusiast" black chassis, has convinced me not to save fifty bucks. Don't worry, Elk, you're safe; I'm still interested in saving bucks.

Have yet to hear anything different on any Cd/SACD player that has the video off on ckt switch...nada...but then I'm sure that's becuase my system is not revealing enough, etc etc etc right? Looks like a marketing thing, on the things, cus' it does nothing!

Marketing or not, at least they are making an effort to appeal to audio enthusiasts specifically. I'm much more interested in the new Cirrus Logic DAC, though.

I thought you'd be happy that a confirmed vinylphile is giving DSD a spin.

Many do. Moreover the spectral differences can be, and have been, measured.

If you don't hear any difference it is clearly something that you need not look for in a component.
