I have a pair of these little guys! They are hysterical fun and I really enjoy them.
I don't know what to suggest that is similar in sound. They are distinctive. Planar speakers do some things incredibly well that others can't really do the same way.
Perhaps search for a used pair?
Ebay has two pair right now. One set is at 100 bucks, the other at 40 bucks.
Here and here...
One pair
And another!
Man I bought these for my brother a few years back, He loves em, can't find anything else to take there place either.
I believe monsoon made a set of full range towers too, F-1000 or something, made in Canada, wonder if any are out there now to be snatched up on the cheap.

I say, throw your budget to the wind and grab a pair of these beauties:

I believe part of the fun is the aesthetic experience, and these babies fit that bill!
If Ebay is not a viable option, consider a pair of Paradigm Atoms on your desktop!

Windzilla!
I heard those speakers at CES one year and the sound was sadly lacking. It could have been ancillary electronics or an inferior "cubicle" at the show, but it really left me wanting "better."
I recall very constricted dynamics, so I'd be curious to give them a try where I had some control over the experience. If you ever run across a pair and don't grab it for yourself, let me know!
Cheers!
