It was this month. The "25th anniversary of the CD" issue. They liked it (a preamp), though they didn't like the MM phono stage. Of course, you can't tell why, because they don't even discuss the manufacturer's claims of RIAA EQ accuracy, let alone test them, but it was a pretty typical AS review.

I'm at the point where I'm about to let my Absolute Sound subscription go. They keep offering me renewals at rates substantially higher than those printed in the magazine, they can't seem to edit the thing competently (this month's howler was printing two pictures of a Marantz integrated amp instead of the SACD player they were reviewing), and other than the music reviews, which are typically pretty good, they don't cover anything that Stereophile, HiFi News, and HiFi+ don't do much better.

I read the review (free at Chapter's) and it seemed clear to me that the reviwers had issues with how the phono stage pertformed, i.e. how it sounded! Hence the "why" seemed entirely evident to me and moreover I don't see how discussion of the manufacturer's claims bear on the question.

I've almost missed the excessive use of emoticons!

I'm hoping DUP is a little more orderly and respectful this time around because he occasionally has some relevant things to say. I don't expect him to be a saint, nor would I want him to be, but I'd appreciate a bit more forum friendliness.

I hope he comes back in a couple days, and I suspect he will.

Welcome back, Carl.

I've always wondered if 'DUP' has any meaning, like being an acronym for something. Being a newcomer to this forum perhaps I've just missed that.

For me, the mood is more like, "And The Band Played On."

I go to Audio Asylum and never see DUP. I wonder if this is the only forum lucky enough to have attracted his attention, or if this was the only one where he lasted longer then the hundredth repeat of one of his 5 topics.

I'd be curious to see forum data about number of posts or page views or traffic and trends during DUP's halcyon days and since his ban. It seemed to be turning into tumble weed town here in terms of post/thread counts before he "left," have the trends changed during his absence?

I have certainly been frequenting the forums more in his absence although not so much as a contributor. I do feel that the forum has become more enjoyable. For one, inflammatory threads are easy to identify and ignore. Previous to Dups departure perfectly good threads would often degrade into uselessness, a process for which he was often the catalyst.

That being said, I really believe that the increase in livelihood in these forums is due to the addition of "The Entry-Level" section. I really think that this section is especially prone to damage by Dupisms, and hope that DUP keeps from bombarding newcomers to the hobby with rants that don't constructively contribute to the specific thread topics and posters.

Not to say that his points and thoughts don't have a place or can't be constructive, its just that he tends to express them in a style, time and place that is overbearing and destructive.

On a side note, the cable section seems even more desolate in his absence.

DUP has posted on the AVA circle at AC.
Interestingly, his posts are well spelled and articulate with only a hint of the DUP we all love(or love to hate)

I do hope DUP comes back unrepentant and as entertaining as ever :-)

Wow, so he eats there and shits here?

Maybe JA and Stephen can ask the people who run AC what their secret is!
I don't hate DUP or love to hate him, I think he gets in the way of hobbiests trying to talk to each other and harms the site's vitality. He drives away Stereophile's business, IMO.

His drive to spam threads is greater than others' drive to talk to each other, and it keeps people away.

Buddha,

I guess DUP doesn't affect me that way, I just find him humourous.

And I'm always inclined to root for the underdog (someone who has been banned)

BTW, he hasn't posted much on the AVA circle, seems most of his activity is here.

WOW Thats nasty ! Does everyone one have to be "stereophile compliant" to be an audiophile ?

Does everyone have to believe each page of advertizing ?

Viva La DUP !!!!!!! , keep up the good work, its a tough fight by yourself but thinking audiophiles every where support you !!!

Yours was a crime of having an opinion that doesnt tow the line.

Again, it's not that.

It's the relentless spamming.

No certain opinion is required, just some common courtesy. DUP will not do people the courtesy of allowing them to carry on a conversation. He's the drunk uncle who turns every conversation at a party into his pet peeve and then wants to have the same arguments over and over and over. Actually, I am quite close to DUP's opinion on many power cord and interconnect issues, but it is not therefore my right to spam each thread about those subjects in order to limit other people's sharing of ideas. If you miss him spamming each cable discussion with the same post over and over, go copy one of his posts and take over for him - it won't matter, because he always posts the same stuff over and over.

You can also fill the vinyl forum with "analog sucks" posts if that floats your DUP boat, but that isn't exactly the purpose of having the forum. If DUP disapproves of vinyl, why spam the board for people who do?

Seriously, if you miss him and his two opinions, why haven't you taken up the slack and hit us all with posts on every equipment thread about AVA, posts on every speaker thread for Legacy, posts about music for Matt Oreo, and his other two posts about cable and tweaks. It wouldn't be hard.

I bet you don't because while it's fun to watch him try to turn the forums into a wasteland of DUP spam, you would never be comfortable doing the same rude thing.

I think your lack of action speaks volumes about the lack of content that DUP actually provides. You wouldn't do it, but you want him to. It's not about "Stereophile compliance," it's about "Stereophile hostility."

Fair?

No Buddha, I don't think that's fair.

DUP doesn't spam, he gives his opinion in his own , unique way and he should be allowed to do that.
He doesn't have the "power" to derail a thread unless the other posters "give" him that power.

Live and let live. If someone disagrees with DUP either ignore him or argue with him. It is a personal choice.

The absolute worst alternative is censoreship, which ,IMO, is what was done to DUP with the ban.

Frankly , I would be embarased to admit I was so weak as to let DUP get under my skin (I don't think you have done that, BTW, but others here have)

DUP has DUP'd me from time to time but I don't let it get to me.

It appears to me that there are some overly sensitive children here who take DUP too seriously and run to the mods for help. They need to grow up.

Hi, Tomjtx!

You may be right, but we already censor spammers of other types, so we are in favor of keeping Casino498456 and Enlargeyourpenis.com off our forums, so at some point we are just arguing about what behavior crosses the line and what doesn't.

This is a privately owned site. Just as I might ask DUP to leave my house if he bahaved that way in person, Stereophile asked him to leave the premises - and left the door open for his return.

To me, it's a business decision. If DUP does more harm to their business than he does good, then it's fair to ask him to cease and desist, which they did and he didn't; so they banned him.

Again, they didn't censor his opinion, just his behavior.

To me, DUP has only said six total things in the last year or more, so his return only promises more of the same, for me.

I'm curious what it is about his posts that seems fresh to you after so long. Where I see relentless rude monotony, others seem to see some amusing "sticking it to the man" thing.

On an audiophile forum, who needs an anti-audiophile?

I belong to a wine forum. How long would you expect someone to last who only posted about two wines which are "the best, end of discussion," and spends the rest of his time saying how all wines taste the same?

To me, DUP wasn't "wrong," he was just boring via lack of content and rude in his way of delivering his ideas. We all have our pissy moments, of course, but when being pissy turns into taking a leak on the place for 18 months, I cansee Stereophile's response as "understandable," whether I'm in favor of it or not.

I would say his own unique way is dominate these forums, he could cut it in half and still remain one of the forums top contributers.

So far in this thread nobody said he did.

absolutely, I just wish Dup would live and let live as well, or rather discuss and let discuss.

Quote:

I think to really sensor DUP they would have had to remove his posts, which they have not, but i see your point. Personally I don't entirely agree with a full on ban, I would rather have seen a post-per-day limit imposed or something, if at all.

again I think these forums have gotten better in the last month or more. Mostly because of the new Entry-Level and the great discussions that go on there, rather than the decreased Noise that DUP's absence has created.

Buddha, thanks for your well constructed reply. You make many good points and I find it hard to disagree with all of them:-)

But I do find it hard to see DUP's posts as spam. Rather , I think he is a somewhat obsessive contrarian who posts in either an entertaining or obnoxious manner depending on one's viewpoint.

I see him as more entertaining than obnoxious and this may be where you and I differ the most.

I understand SP has the legal right to ban anyone, but it does go against my own personal sense of fairness that he was banned.

OTOH I do realize Stephen and JA waited a long time to make the decision to ban DUP and I don't think they made the decision lightly.

Anyway, DUP is back so maybe I won't have to write any more songs.
That should be a relief to everyone :-)

During my medical leave of absense, I have cured myself of Cancer, Aids, and post traumatic stress syndrome. I feel refreshed, invigorated, and still not ready to buy overpriced wires, and under powered overpriced amps. For some things there is no cure. And yes, I did sleep at a Holidy Inn Express, that allowed me to cure the stuff. But even Holidy Inn Express, can't make wires do anything the ads claim. That may take the Helmsly Plazza. Oh wait, I don't wanna support an estate that pays dogs $12 million, I will not be staying there.

DUP does mean something.......haven't you ever been DUP'd? Hmmm, they siad these wires would bring the band live in my house.....somehow my BLOSES still sound like BLOSE, AC cord gonna make my CD player play better, DUP MFG. If you beleive, we will sell it. and yes, all you need is 3 W of amplifier, and you can get realism at home, but make sure you use this $5K AC cord, and these speaker wires.
