Madeleine Peyroux: Half the Perfect World
...enticing, thought provoking
Ry Cooder: My Name is Buddy
: Chavez Revine
...need I say more
Charlie Watts - Jim Keltner Project
...basically a tribute to jazz drummers but it is much more than jazz and drums.
Hey, Mike53!
I love "Chavez Ravine," and will put "My Name is Buddy" on the list! I had completely forgotten about it.
I've played the first Madeleine Peyroux for a friend and told him it was a new long lost Billie Holiday remix, and he believed me!
She's playing a small outdoor venue in Reno this Friday...I may sneak up there.
Thanks for those reminders!
It is so nice to finally hear that I am not only one who is thrilled with Madeleine Peyroux's work.
She always has some of best musicians on her albums, too.
I've been meaning to go by my favorite record store and buy some Pancho Sanchez discs. My honey do list has been a little full lately, but Wednesday is looking good for the record store.
Have a great time at the Peyroux show!
Her band is indeed excellent. Scott Amendola is currently playingdrums with her. See if you can score a copy of his latest CD, "Believe" - it's awesome.
FWIW, Amendola is also the drummer for the Nels Cline Singers; Cline and his group are profiled in the current issue of Stereophile (Sept.). Cline also makes some mighty contributions on Amendola's "Believe."
Let us know how the show goes for you!
Buddha,
Another one of my favorites, from Cooder, is "Bop Till You Drop"...not quite as sophisticated but very musical.
Madeleine Peyroux/Billie Holiday, a comparison that never occured to me but yes, I see it now. "Careless Love" is another good one from Ms. Peyroux.
If only I lived near Reno.
wkhanna,
If you enjoy Madeleine listen to Diana Krall - there are similarities I think you'll recognize.
Someone I neglected to mention, if you're a Latin music fan, is Ruben Blades - intelligent lyrics (if one speaks Spanish) and a sophisticated music style.
Also, the Spanic Boys' "Sunshine"...similar to Steve Earl or The Blasters.
Enjoy!
Mike
Actually, I prefer Madeleine to both Diana Krall or Norah Jones.
Norah's stuff seems so monotonous and single dimensioned to me. The best thing I ever heard her do is on the Marian McPartland CD
I am only familiar with the Nora tunes that have been aired via radio.
Yes, "Madeleine over the others".
Hey Mike.
Part of my re-discovery of the Fania label includes the really brilliant collaboration between Ruben Blades and Willie Colon, Siembra. I remember the album cover, as well as the songs, from when I was a kid. It was a family favorite.
Are you familiar with it? It includes the classics "Plastico" and "Pedro Navaja."
My to buy list:
1. More Jerry Butler- just got into him, but he is #1 on my list of soulful singers
2. More JJ Cale
3. The new Trey Anastasio album
4. The new Common album
5. Derek Bailey
Stephen,
Admittedly, my exposure to and knowledge of Latin music and its' artists is limited. I first became familiar with Blades about 15 years ago when I saw him perform on a Public TV channel. (I never was able to find the tune he did on any record.)
I know of the collaboration with Willie Colon but haven't heard any of the songs. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll be sure to try and find it.
Mike
New Lyle Lovett due August 28th.
New Annie Lennox due October 2nd

I keep hearing rumors of a new McCoy Tyner Album, where he is joined by a bunch of different guitarists, including Derek Trucks, John Scofield, etc.. and they cover Coltrane tunes. Sounds interesting and fun!
Anyone know anything about this?
I have a hybrid SACD on order. It's the Mercury Living Presence release of Janos Starker playing all six of Bach's unaccompanied cello suites. It's the first music to be purchased specifically to enjoy on my new Oppo.
The Starker is nice.
The new Emerson Lake And Palmer box set that's coming out next week[From the Beginning 6 cd's and a dvd.....the dvd's PAL btw not NTSC]
More Rolling Stones, some Miles Davis and hopefully an obscure release or two, like the old Duane and Greg Allman bootleg put out by a little outfit in Florida.
Stephen,
I just recently acquired "Siembra"...marvelous brass section and Wille Colon's trombone playing was top notch.
I recall hearing "Pedro Navaja" on a local college station, in the late '70's...didn't realize, at the time, that it was Blades singing. "Metiendo Mano" was another Blades/Colon release worth buying.
Another worthwhile CD, by Cooder, is "Mambo Sinuendo". It's a collaboration with Manuel Galban (of Buena Vista Social Club). Very little on vocals, which was fine with me. At times it was like dueling strings other times they played in unison. Real Latin music, it was recorded in Havana...Jim Keltner played drums. A most worthwhile CD.
So glad you liked, Siembra, Mike. I've heard great things about Metiendo Mano, and I love Cooder's Buena Vista stuff, so I'll be sure to look for both titles. Thanks very much.
