Assuming you've set the output volume of your MP3 player to at or near its max level, what problem do you have by increasing the volume level on your receiver? Is it clipping?
It's more of a concern with forgetting to turn down the volume before switching sources - the volume level is so high that if I switch to the tuner, the sound level would likely damage my speakers. I really haven't detected any clipping, but I'll check that out.
