Sorry, Rich, when I tipped you to Mapleshade and Big Sweet and Blue in response to your statement that there weren't any Norris Turney CD's available these days I thought you might enjoy that recording. To make up for the bad tip I'll suggest you avoid Gerry Mulligan Meets Johnny Hodges and The Coltrane Quartet Plays Ballads. I suspect you'd be disappointed in them too - besides they're vinyl.
On the contrary the Gerry Mulligan meet Hodges and the Coltrane ballads are both excellent recordings and but the recordings that I just reviewed do nothing for me and are excellent as background music at a romanic dinner. For example another recording "Victor Goines Love Dance" contains some ballads as well but he plays with a fire and perfection that make one stand back and do some serious listening. A good recording that sounds great on my hi-fi does not erase a sleepy session and to me the recordings I listened to do nothing for me at all except for Mr Goines.
