You can only get multichannel audio from SACDS on the 970HD using the 5 channel analog connections[it's the same with any SACD player]unless the player has a firewire/HDMI connection which the Oppo doesn't.

I have an Oppo DVD player connected only with coaxial digital inputs to an A/V receiver (Sony 5200ES). When I play SACD I get (a nice) sound therefore it seems that digital output is enabled. But I get only 2 channels (even if priority is set to multi-channel) and no hint of the actual sampling rate (unlike when playing DVD audio).
I wonder if there is any way of getting multichannel sound from SACD through the digital connexion.
Can anybody help?

When I tried what you are describing, I had no output on the coax when I changed the Oppo setup to play the SACD layer. Only output on coax was from the CD layer of a hybrid SACD.

Doesn't the Sony 5200ES accept HDMI?

Dear Ross,
Thanks for your answer and recommendations
I have the SACD "priority" on the OPPO set to "SACD Multichannel", I made the last firmware update, I set the digital output to "raw" the rate to 192 K, and I disabled HDMI sound output as suggested by Wes in his excellent article.
With this settings I certainly get a digital output for SACD.
If it is coming from the CD layer, I cannot know for certain, lacking the measurement equipment but I find it unlikely. I understand that connecting the analog multichannel output of the OPPO to the multichannel input of the SONY will allow to get the 5 channel sound, but according to Stereophile article the analog output does not sound very good. Also 2 channel sound from CDs is better (to my humble ears) through the coaxial connexion than the analog. By the way the Sony has HDMI inputs but I did not succeed to make them work for audio signals.
I am interested in this topic as I see using the OPPO as a way to enjoy high end sound without spending many kBucks in a SACD player (e.g. Linn or Ayre) but maybe I'm wrong

No such thing in a consumer SACD player of a digital SACD output..it's in the plan, no digital out. Isn't the DIG out labeld PCM or Cd out or sumpting, not DSD or SACD, can't be.

Hey Quark,

The Oppo is a good investment for getting yourself going and building a library, but it is not the end of the line for quality. If you are looking to get out of the SACD what you can you need something better than an Oppo. From there you have many other devices.

You are listening to a two channel PCM digital signal. (PCM is the format on CD's). The Oppo absolutely does not output DSD (the SACD digital format), nor does your equipment decode a digital DSD stream. The only question is how the PCM signal is being produced.

Most likely it is the CD layer of your hybrid CD. The other possibility is that the Oppo takes the SACD digital info and converts it to PCM. This isn't uncommon, especially in less expensive units, where the SACD info is converted to PCM for procesing.

The test would be to try and play an SACD only disk, such as most SACDs from Sony. If you get no output playing such a disk you know that you have been listening to the CD layer of hybrids. If you get sound, the Oppo is converting the SACD info to PCM.
