I'm sorry the JBLs just don't sound right to me, I thought the Infinity Beta 50s (almost a third the price) sounded better than the JBL Studio L 890s, but as with everything audio your ears have to decide for you. I would consider listening to the Monitor Audio RS8, Klipsch RF-63, PSB Image T65 or the Paradigm Monitor 11 as well.
I have the infinity beta 50s at work side by side with the L890s and I find the betas lack clarity in the top end they seem a little dull. Im in australia so im not sure if there is any difference between the ones we get here to what you have heard but thanks for the suggestions I will check them out!
Hey, that's OK because I probably lack clarity in the top end as well. I do have some high frequency hearing loss, worse in in the left ear. That's why its good you are doing the listening for you and not me. If possible check out as many as you can in your price range and if you arrive at the JBL L890s you've done all you can.

JBL 880
Those seem to be pretty impressive speakers, especially given their price and ability to work with a wide range of music styles.
