Need a Quiet External HD

Have you considered streaming via wi fi with a squeezebox or transporter? Then your HD could be in another room and the noise wouldn't be a factor.

I have considered streaming from another room, but the problem with this solution is that the computer running iTunes has to be in the same room as my amplifiers and speakers. This puts a premium on having a quiet HD. There are HDs that are designed to be used in studio/recording environments, like those made by Glyph, that are said to be really silent, but they cost about 80-90 cents per gigabyte, or about twice what normal consumer drives in the 750 GB range cost. I might have to go that route, but I'm hoping that a reader here will have used a consumer drive that is fairly quiet when reading, if not searching.

Does the computer have to be in the same room only for the purpose of using itunes to make music selections or some other reason?

If it's just a matter of music selection the Transporter allows you to do this via remote control using it's Slim Server application. Problem solved.

If there's some other reason for having the computer in the same room you can look at the fan-less HD's like EZQuest Monsoon to lower the noise output of your external storage unit. You've still got to contend with the actual PC noise itself though. Only solution for that is building a dampened box to house your actual computer.
