It sounds like you had a wonderful evening - color me jealous. He is truly a remarkable player.

The numerous mics are a result of the sound engineer wanting lots of highlighting mics. Each mic is over a specific section or player. Later the mixing engineer can turn up the flute solo a little or highlight the clarinets, etc. All of these little adjustments can make a recording sound more "real" in the sense that the recorded experience can more closely match our experience of live performance.

Fascinatingly, when we watch an orchestra play our brains make these same adjustments allowing us to hear the flute solo clearly when it really is not much louder than how the flute normally plays (of course good orchestration is even more important). We make the same mental adjustments when reading the score along with a recorded performance. Cool stuff.

I'm afraid you're in a different league Elk. I fear trying to follow a full orchestral score would make my head hurt.

I do enjoy following solo piano scores while listening and marvelling at the dexterity of the artist. I find it easier to see things like cross-overs looking at the notes on the page than actually hearing them being played. No doubt that says something very revealing about the way my brain works!

Unfortunately this also has the effect of making it all seem very easy - and then I sit down at the piano and come back down to earth with a bump.

Ouch!
